Are you ready to make a tangible impact on the UK's strategic road network? We’re recruiting for a Highways Technology Engineer to join our dynamic Area 7 team, where innovation meets infrastructure. This is an exciting opportunity to work on the maintenance and repair of roadside technology assets across National Highways Area 7. From traffic signals and electronic signage to fault diagnostics and system upgrades, you’ll be at the forefront of keeping our roads safe, efficient, and future‑ready.
The primary depot for this position is Watford Gap Motorway Compound (M1, Jct 16/17) (NN67UZ). The role is mostly remote and will require travel to multiple locations as necessary. This position offers a competitive salary and overtime. The standard hours of work are 42 hours per week, Monday – Friday, with a standby rota.
What You’ll Do
* Carry out reactive and planned maintenance on highways technology equipment, including traffic signals, CCTV, emergency roadside telephones, queue protection, traffic counting equipment, radar, and weather stations.
* Perform electronic diagnostic checks on highways communications assets for fault identification and resolution.
* Prepare detailed reports and documentation covering maintenance actions, fault findings, upgrades, and asset conditions.
* Provide expert technical advice to colleagues, clients, and contractors on procedures, issues, and best practices.
* Assist with project administration and control, including progress tracking, resource management, and regulatory compliance.
* Coordinate with contractors, suppliers, and local authorities during the deployment and integration of new highways communications infrastructure.
* Participate in system upgrades, technology enhancements, and commissioning of new equipment.
* Oversee asset inventory and support emergency responses to critical incidents affecting highway technology systems.
* Contribute to health and safety compliance by performing risk assessments and following safe working practices.
* Engage in training initiatives, mentor junior engineers, and pursue continuous professional development to stay updated on industry advancements.
* Organise daily tasks as allocated by the Works Coordinator to ensure they are completed within client set time‑scales.
* Work safely as a lone worker and ensure all health and safety rules are followed.
* Volunteer for nightworks when required.

What You’ll Bring
Essential
* A full UK driving licence.
* Familiarity with highways communication and electrical assets.

Desirable
* A relevant qualification in an electrical or engineering discipline.
* Experience in highways technology or a similar field.
* Knowledge of 2391 Test and Inspection.
* Familiarity with 18th Edition wiring regulations.
