Are you a fun outgoing personality, highly self motivated, skilled as a confident mentor with an engaging personality, enjoy working in outdoor education and are looking for a highly rewarding opportunity to work for a multi award-winning not-for-profit youth engagement programme with a military ethos, we want to hear from you.

You will be working as part of a Tiger Troop team within local schools and communities in providing our award winning Youth Engagement and Leadership Programmes to children and young people across Kent and the S-East.

Our multi award winning early intervention youth provision has been delivering adventurous learning through a structured, disciplined and educationally accredited youth provision for Primary and Secondary Schools since 2007. Our programmes have been proven to change young lives for the better. Instilling self-discipline, raising confidence, and improving self-esteem in young people from 6 – 18 years of age. Challenger Troop Instructors strive to give young people the tools to take responsibility for their own lives now and prepare them for their lives ahead.

What we are looking for:

A dynamic, energetic and enthusiastic person to join as a Trainee Team Instructors within our Kent teams. Working under the Team Leader you will be supported and mentored in delivering a wide range of challenging activities such as bushcraft, physical fitness training, climbing, obstacle courses, camp craft, expeditions, navigation, first aid and more (Training given in local and NGB qualifications).

You will be required to deliver exciting and engaging outdoor adventurous activities within a uniformed, disciplined environment, be an excellent role model and have a strong and engaging personality with the ability to motivate disadvantaged children and young people.

You will be able to demonstrate a good level of communication, both written and verbal, with young people, schools and youth organisations. You will be passionate about helping young people improve their life chances and will be creative and adaptive in your approach to delivering training and the Challenger Troop experience. You will be subject to an enhanced DBS and Reference check and required to undertake Safeguard Training on an annual basis.

Successful applicants will receive a full course induction and ongoing training. There will also be opportunities to gain further National Governing Body qualifications in outdoor activities.


Key Responsibilities

* Deliver sessional training activities to participants through the Tiger Troop in School provision, In School team building and Enrichment Activities. This role also includes supporting our Core Programme and Residential Camps at our own outdoor adventure centre.
* You will be working closely with our participants to mentor, build trust and respect, encouraging and inspiring them to achieve all they can and more.
* Motivating young people to engage with and to participate and try new challenges. You will ensure that they work within their capabilities, manage risks and are encouraged to take on responsibilities for themselves and others.
* Build on their teamwork, communication skills and improve their behaviour, approach to learning, raising self-esteem and self aspiration.
* Visiting schools and other educational settings to discuss with staff and students individual needs and expectations.
* Monitor behaviour and attitudes of all candidates whilst on the course, during school and at home.
* Assisting with the completion of reports and evaluation forms
* Recognise personal achievement and reward candidates when appropriate.
* Contribute to organising the Awards Evenings at the end of each term.
* Conduct safety checks of all equipment before set-up, and ensure that all equipment is neatly stored after use.
* Be accountable for the participants in your charge, ensuring their safety and welfare at all times.
* Be an Ambassador for Challenger Troop at all times and promote the ethos of the organisation through events and marketing initiatives, as well as with school programmes.

* Strong written and verbal communication skills
* Willingness to learn and be trained in new skills
* Reliable and with a strong work ethic
* Passionate about helping young people improve their life chances
* Good time-keeping
* Smart appearance
* Some form of youth / educational work
* Full clean driving license (D1 classification or MIDAS is desirable as Mini Bus Driving may form part of the role)
* FAW, NSRA and NGB qualification in outdoor education an advantage
* Level 3 Teaching and Training Awards (PTTLS)
