An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Operator to join our Major Projects South West Maintenance & Faults team. Based at one of our Taunton, Weston or Bristol depots, you’ll play a key role in supporting the safe, reliable operation of our network across the Somerset area. Main Responsibilities As an Operator, you will work alongside a Craftsperson to support the construction, maintenance, replacement and repair of assets up to and including 132kV equipment. You may also carry out asset inspections as required. You’ll spend much of your time out in the field — either lone working while undertaking inspections or as part of a team of up to four, predominantly at outdoor substations. The environment is fast‑paced, hands-on, and requires someone who can act quickly, decisively and responsibly. The Ideal Candidate We’re looking for someone who brings: GCSE English and Maths (Grade A–G / 1–9)* or equivalent qualification deemed to be at the same level in these subjects, such as Functional Skills. A full UK driving licence and the flexibility to be mobile throughout the Somerset area. Willingness to take part in standby duties when required. Ideally, some experience in the electrical field — but don’t worry, full training will be provided. Strong safety awareness: you’ll follow safety procedures, use protective equipment, and work responsibly in a live operational environment. A flexible approach to support the team in meeting its objectives. Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment. Please be aware that for National Grid roles involving working at height or using fall‑arrest devices, there is an upper weight limit of 135kg, due to the maximum safe working load of the equipment used.
