Principal Control Systems Engineer

Are you an experienced Control Systems Engineer ready to lead complex automation and industrial projects? This senior role offers the opportunity to take technical ownership of major control system design and integration programmes, mentoring engineers and driving excellence across project delivery.

What you'll be doing:
Leading the design, specification, and integration of control systems, including PLCs, DCS, SCADA, HMIs, and safety systems.
Developing control system architectures and strategies to meet performance, reliability, and safety targets.
Overseeing the programming, configuration, and commissioning of control equipment.
Conducting risk assessments and ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards (such as IEC 61511, ISA-88, ISA-95).
Working with multidisciplinary teams across mechanical, electrical, and process disciplines to ensure full system integration.
Reviewing and approving technical documentation including P&IDs, I/O lists, control narratives, and test protocols.
Providing technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers.
Leading or supporting FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing), SAT (Site Acceptance Testing), and commissioning activities.
Troubleshooting and resolving complex control system issues during design, commissioning, and operational phases.
Supporting project management functions including budgeting, scheduling, and coordination with vendors and subcontractors.
What we're looking for:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
10+ years of relevant experience in control systems or automation engineering.
Proficiency with major control system platforms (e.g. Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, ABB, Honeywell, DeltaV, Schneider).
Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, and OPC.
Experience in regulated or process-driven industries such as power, water, oil & gas, or manufacturing.
Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
Proven leadership experience with the ability to mentor and develop others.
Full UK driving licence.
