Responsibilities
The Product Development Engineer - Forestry is responsible for all product innovations, developments, and cost-out activities related to the segment & site, complying with customer requirements and maintaining the market's leading position.
This role leads product innovations and developments for the Forestry segment at the Aberdare production facility. It supports sales growth by solving customer issues and maintaining productivity and cost competitiveness. The engineer collaborates closely with operations, quality, procurement, sales, and marketing teams to ensure successful product development and launch.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Leading the development of new and improved products based on research, new technologies, and customer needs, from concept to commercialization. Conducting feasibility studies and preparing Business Opportunity Case Assessments (BOCAs).
2. Planning, managing, and executing product trials post-BOCA approval, coordinating with procurement, process engineering, quality, and production teams.
3. Evaluating inquiries and new specifications through prototypes, tests, and validations.
4. Assessing safety risks associated with new developments and managing risks in collaboration with the EHS manager to ensure safe trials and product transfer.
5. Supporting the commercial team to ensure successful product launches.
6. Providing information and support for R&D and sales presentations, strategy development, patent protection, and external collaborations.
7. Recommending product modifications based on customer feedback and market surveys.
8. Developing product specifications in cooperation with operations, including testing and process alignment.
9. Building and maintaining relationships with customers, suppliers, universities, and labs.
10. Advising on process and cost optimization activities.
11. Conducting benchmarking studies to develop knowledge and identify development opportunities.
12. Researching and implementing new or combined existing technologies for product innovation.
13. Managing the introduction and qualification of new raw materials, including regulatory activities for safety approval.
14. Supporting the commercial team in building technical relationships with key accounts to increase market share.
This is a site-based role in Aberdare, CF44 6DA, with some travel. No agencies, and proof of right to work in the UK is required.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in a science field, preferably polymer chemistry.
Certifications: None required.
Work Experience: 5+ years of professional experience, experience in extrusion, and demonstrated capability to lead major development projects (preferred but not essential).
Languages: English (verbal and written). High computer literacy.
