Drainage Engineer (Grade 8) – Highways Asset Management
This role is not open to international sponsorship.

The Role
As a Drainage Engineer, you will support the inspection, maintenance, and development of highway drainage infrastructure and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS). You’ll contribute to the delivery of a risk‑based approach to asset management and help ensure our drainage systems are resilient, effective, and future‑proof.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the Highways Asset Team in developing plans and policies for maintenance and renewal of drainage infrastructure and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems.
* Provide technical guidance to the Highways Asset Team for all drainage related issues.
* Consider proposals for new drainage connections to the highway drainage network.
* Consider local departures to specifications where national standards are not appropriate for Lancashire conditions; liaise with clients such as Highways Design and Highways Operations, and other internal parties such as Flood Risk Management and Development Control as requested.
* Input and retrieve data from electronic record systems/databases using the Highways Asset Management System (HAMS), including the mapping of all underground assets.
* Maintain the Flood Risk Register.
* Support the development of capital programmes and annually review cyclic drainage maintenance programmes through HAMS; liaise with Highways Operations on delivery.
* Assist in the development of the Highways Management Plan to future‑proof drainage systems for future situations.
* Support the management of correspondence on drainage matters and resolve ownership and other queries.
* Undertake ongoing professional development and training as required by the post.
* Work to deadlines and prioritise workloads.
* Work alone on site as required following the relevant lone working procedure.
* Use Microsoft Office applications and the Internet.
About You
You’ll bring experience in civil engineering or a related discipline, with a strong focus on drainage. You’ll be confident working independently, have excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, and be comfortable using specialised systems and software.
Essential Qualifications And Experience
* A recognised vocational qualification or equivalent practical experience.
* Knowledge of relevant highway drainage design standards, guidance and practices such as Well Managed Highway Infrastructure – A Code of Practice, Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB), SuDs (CIRIA C754).
* Experience working with drainage infrastructure and asset management systems.
* Strong communication skills and ability to influence and collaborate with others.
* Full UK driving licence.
