Description Role: Technology Specialist Grade and Salary: Grade 7, £37,174 per annum FTE and working pattern: 0.8 FTE, 28hrs per week, Monday - Friday Holiday Entitlement: 33 days annual leave plus 9 buildings closed days (and Christmas Eve when it falls on a weekday) Purpose of Role CONSOLIDATE is a NetworkPlus led by Heriot-Watt University, the University of Strathclyde and Age Scotland and funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The network will investigate the potential for both new and existing technologies to support and enhance the independence of people living with dementia. The Technology Specialist, working alongside core network staff, will support and lead activities in which new or existing technologies are co-designed to meet the functional needs of people living with dementia. This will involve close collaboration with people with lived experience, academic researchers, industry stakeholders, community and third sector partners, and health and social care organisations., The Technology Specialist will have the opportunity to spend designated periods with partner organisations to facilitate access to their technical skills and expertise in the assessment and deployment of technologies that can support independence for people living with dementia, including ensuring the successful implementation and adoption of those. Key Duties & Responsibilities Data Collection, Feedback and Improvement: Gather feedback from users and carers (including unpaid carers and health and social care professionals) on the effectiveness and usability of the new and existing technologies, report findings and provide input for development and enhancements. Technical Assistance: Act as the primary point of contact for troubleshooting and resolving technical issues related to the technologies being tested within the network, offering clear and simple solutions to users who may have varying levels of experience with technology. Technology Adaptation : Ability to adapt and reconsider existing technologies to suit audience and user requirements User Support & Training: Provide hands-on technical support for people living with dementia and carers (including unpaid carers and health and social care professionals), ensuring they feel confident and capable in using technologies to ensure successful adoption. Conduct training sessions and create user-friendly instructional materials. Installation & Setup: Assist with the installation, setup, and configuration of technological solutions (e.g., home monitoring systems, communication aids, assistive devices) in participants' homes. Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of support activities, including troubleshooting steps, resolutions, and user feedback. Contribute to reports on network progress, outcomes, and challenges. Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with network members, including people with lived experience, core staff and academic leads, researchers, health and social care professionals, and technology developers, to ensure seamless integration of solutions. Work closely with health and social care providers and other stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach to supporting people living with dementia through technology, ensuring people’s needs direct all activities. Continuous Learning: Stay up to date with new developments in technology and dementia care, applying best practices and emerging solutions to improve user outcomes. Essential & Desirable Criteria Essential Postgraduate degree in a related field (e.g., Information Technology, Computer Science, Health Technology, or a similar discipline). Postgraduate experience and/or postdoctoral degree in a related field. Proven experience in providing technical support or training, ideally with a focus on health and social care or similar settings. Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot technical issues in a user-friendly manner. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical users. Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping others, particularly older adults and people living with dementia. Experience working with people with dementia or cognitive decline/impairment is highly desirable. Familiarity with a variety of technologies commonly used in dementia care (e.g., smart home devices, wearables, remote health monitoring tools). An adaptable approach to collaboration and working projects and specialisms. Desirable Passion for improving the quality of life for people living with dementia, their families and carers. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral team. Willingness to learn and stay updated on the latest developments in technologies and dementia care.
