The International Office of the General Counsel (IOGC) is a growing and high-performing in‑house legal team with personnel based in five countries. The team provides legal advice on a wide variety of key strategic matters and legal, regulatory and reputational issues and risks, and also supports the execution of critical business decisions made by KPMGI.
As KPMG becomes a digital business, technology enables everything it does and requires KPMG to continue to transform with technology in support of its Growth and Trust agenda. This role focuses on the product and innovation aspects of Intellectual Property (IP), Technology and Data, and is part of the IOGC. It focuses on providing legal advice and support on the development, protection, enforcement, acquisition and licensing of technology, software and data, particularly the risks, protections and opportunities related to the patent aspects of KPMG’s IP, technology and data strategy.
Responsibilities
* Support the most senior patent lawyer within IOGC in working with KPMGI business teams and technology developers to identify proprietary assets, determine best legal methods to protect such IP assets, and execute protection processes.
* Assist in patent application filings in the UK Intellectual Property Office and European Patent Office, and manage external counsel for filings outside those jurisdictions.
* Identify third parties that may be infringing on KPMGI IP and enforce KPMGI’s rights, while exploring licensing and monetisation opportunities.
* Connect patent protection to marketing and selling patent‑protected technology solutions.
* Support understanding of the technical aspects of KPMG‑developed technology solutions and counsel on freedom‑to‑operate, enforcement, and protection strategies.
* Analyse and advise on potential infringement of third‑party emerging technology (AI, blockchain) and assess the strength of third‑party patents for KPMG services.
* Provide legal advice on implementing AI in KPMGI technology solutions, ensuring compliance with applicable law, data rights, IP rights and the Trusted AI framework.
* Assess whether KPMGI has proper IP and data rights to license/ provide member firms and clients with access to KPMGI technology, covering license‑chain terms and global quality and risk‑management policies.
* Collaborate with global professionals in technology, architecture, risk management, procurement, branding and marketing, and with other IP, technology and data lawyers within KPMG member firms.
* Prepare and deliver training and education on protecting KPMG IP, avoiding misuse of third‑party IP, and identifying third‑party use of KPMG owned IP.
Qualifications
* Mid‑level qualified lawyer with experience in IP and technology law, including patent practice before the UK Intellectual Property Office and European Patent Office.
* Proficient working knowledge of on‑premises and cloud‑based information technology businesses, services and products.
* Experience leading less complex matters independently and managing accountability for more complex, cross‑border matters under the supervision of a senior lawyer.
* Strong analytical skills and ability to absorb large amounts of information with minimal supervision.
* Excellent time‑management skills and ability to prioritise competing deadlines.
* Awareness of global business, geopolitical, legal, regulatory and technology trends relevant to KPMG.
* Experience working on cross‑border matters and cultural sensitivity for engaging diverse stakeholders.
Technical Skills, Abilities & Qualifications
* UK qualified lawyer (or equivalent).
* European Patent Attorney.
* UK Chartered Patent Attorney (or equivalent).
* Proficient technical legal skills in IP and technology law, focusing on protection and enforcement of IP rights, including patents, copyrightable software and trade secrets.
* Negotiating and drafting skills for a wide variety of technology and IP agreements across jurisdictions.
* Advising on protecting and enforcing IP and technology rights, AI platforms, models and data analytics.
* Experience with trademark matters and blockchain is beneficial.
* Well‑developed legal drafting and communication skills.
* Experience in negotiation and Disability Confident awareness.
