Offer description

Street Cleaning Driver/Labourer (HGV) Drive your career forward in more than just miles and earn up to *£31,547 per annum (which includes a temporary market forces supplement of £1.77 per hour) plus great benefits! About Us Are you looking for a new role or a new challenge or just a change from a normal driving job? If so, we offer an excellent benefits package, with sociable working hours, early daily finishes and work in the local area with no long-distance journeys. East Staffordshire Borough Council takes its role as Principal Litter Authority seriously and the Street Cleaning team is proud of their achievements in keeping the highways, footpaths and open spaces of the Borough clean and tidy. The team uses a variety of techniques to tackle the problems associated with litter, detritus, dog fouling, graffiti and weed killing, including both mechanical and manual sweeping. Why not put your professional HGV Class C licence and skills to great use and take the next step in your career and join us as a Street Cleaning driver/labourer. We have reviewed our pay structure and are now able to offer an enhanced salary package to candidates of the right calibre. The Council offers a generous annual leave entitlement, a local government pension scheme and regularised hours. Hours of work are normally Monday to Friday. There is a requirement to work on public and Bank Holidays and occasionally at weekends to ensure the provision of an efficient and effective service. The Role The role involves the driving of allocated street cleaning vehicles for the purpose of the Street Cleaning Service. These vehicles range from 3.5 tonne up to 26 tonne classification, including a 12-tonne lorry mounted crane used to collect fly tipping and 15-tonne road sweepers. You will drive and be responsible for your allocated vehicle, including its security, and you will control and supervise the staff that are with you. Prior to leaving the depot, you will be responsible for checking that the vehicle is roadworthy by undertaking a Daily Vehicle Maintenance Check and for reporting any defects to the Supervisor in accordance with Council procedure. The use of an in-cab device to check workflow demands and to record cleanliness levels is also required. Key Requirements You must hold a valid HGV Class C licence (also known as a Class 2 Licence), a CPC card and have previous HGV driving experience. You should also have a sound understanding of the health and safety implications of driving large road sweepers, combined with excellent customer care and communication skills. Ideally, you’ll have previous experience within the waste industry, but if not, full training will be provided. On occasion, you will be required to support the waste collection team to cover periods of absence. This will require you to drive refuse collection vehicles. There is also a requirement to work overtime on Public and Bank Holidays and some weekends to ensure the provision of an efficient and effective public service. What we offer you • an enhanced salary package • enhanced pay rates for working on the occasional weekend and Bank Holidays • generous annual leave entitlement – 24 days including concessionary and Bank Holidays • membership of the Local Government Pension scheme – an excellent employer contribution • 37 hour working week with regularised hours working directly for the Council • excellent learning and development opportunities • occupational health support and an employee support programme Additional Information The Council is actively building diverse teams and welcomes applications from everyone including people of different ages, sex, gender, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation. ESBC is a Disability Confident Employer. Important Notes for Candidates Visa Sponsorship As a smaller local authority, we do not currently hold a sponsorship licence. Therefore, we are unable to issue Certificates of Sponsorship. All applicants must have the right to work in the UK at the time of application as we are unable to support visa sponsorship. Personal Relationships A candidate for any appointment with East Staffordshire Borough Council who know of any family or close personal relationship with any Member or Officer, must disclose that relationship when completing an application form for employment. Basic salary (not including market forces supplement) starting from £25,989 to £28,142 per annum.
