St Columba's Hospice Care is an independent local charity which provides palliative care and end of life care to people from across Edinburgh and East Lothian.
Working in harmony with our clinicians; our Active Health volunteers come alongside those living with a life limiting diagnosis and offer their support with some simple exercises or activities under the guidance of the Hospice Allied Health Professions (AHP) Team.
Volunteers will be matched with a Hospice patient living at home or in a community setting. Each match will be time limited with the aim being for the patient to achieve their chosen goal, set in agreement with the Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist or Therapy assistant.
Hospice staff and volunteers are expected to reflect our Hospice Values in the way they carry out their roles, and in their interactions with each other and with patients, family members and any other visitors.

What will I be doing/involved in?
* Supporting & encouraging a Hospice community patient to achieve their rehabilitation goals over 6 to 8 weekly sessions. Activities may include exercises to improve mobility, manage breathlessness or fatigue, or practising everyday tasks to make them more manageable or improve confidence in doing them.
* Regularly updating the Hospice AHP team on progress and emailing a short ‘report’ after each session.

Time commitment and duration
Approx 8 sessions, preferably weekly and between 9am to 4pm during Mon – Friday. Sessions will last 1 hour.

* Volunteers must be 18 years or over
Training
* Team / role induction and training
* Team meetings (if/as necessary)
* Face to face session with AHP team including safe exercise supervision and moving and handling.
* Regular supervision sessions with a member of the AHP team
Additional Information
You will be entitled to claim travelling expenses incurred as a Active Health Volunteer. These will be agreed in advance with the AHP Lead and submitted in accordance with the Hospice Expenses Policy.
