Sexual Health Nurse

An exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and dynamic registered nurse with a keen interest in sexual and reproductive health to join the West Sexual Health Service team in Skelmersdale and Ormskirk. The post is 22.5 hrs per week over 3 flexibly scheduled days, including evenings. Successful candidates will be based at Ashurst Health Centre and work in community clinics throughout West Lancashire.
We seek an individual with excellent communication skills who enjoys working as part of a team and providing care to patients requiring testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and/or contraception.
Responsibilities
* Provide sexual health advice, education, asymptomatic screening and treatments in a confidential environment, recognising when to refer to a doctor or senior nurse.
* Perform venepuncture in line with Trust Policy.
* Issue prescribed medication as requested by medical staff and non‑medical prescribers and offer relevant advice to patients.
* Provide sexual health advice following a positive STI diagnosis, initiate treatments per Patient Group Directions and implement partner notification measures.
* Administer vaccinations and immunisations (e.g. Hepatitis A/B and HPV) according to clinical protocol and PGDs.
* Supply emergency contraception; re‑issue combined oral, progesterone‑only contraceptive methods and Depo‑Provera injections, checking relevant histories.
* Support Senior Sexual Health Nurses to maintain high service levels in the absence of a doctor and refer appropriately.
* Ensure excellent documentation in electronic patient records.
* Act as patient advocate, promote privacy, dignity and modesty.
* Assess patients under 16 using Fraser Guidelines, with safeguarding referrals as required.
* Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, audits, teaching and professional development activities.
* Maintain stock, safety of drugs, cleanliness, infection control and report incidents.
Person Specification
Experience and Knowledge
* Evidence of ongoing professional development.
* Multi‑disciplinary working experience.
* Knowledge of data protection acts.
* Experience in nurse‑led clinics and working to PGDs.
* Experience working with young people and under‑16s.
* Experience of clinical audit.
Education and Qualifications
* First level Registered Nurse.
* ENB R71 or equivalent contraceptive course.
* Specialist course or in‑house training in STI screening.

Skills and Ability
* Able to perform venepuncture.
* Computer literate.

* Car owner/driver with full UK driver’s licence, able to visit clinical sites.
* Independent genital examination and screening tests for male and female patients, including cervical cytology.
* Basic microscopy skills.
* Basic knowledge of sexual health.
* Knowledge of national and local sexual health strategies.
* Ability to mentor students.

Salary: £32,073 to £39,043 a year (NHS Pay Award pending).
