What is the job role?
Coventry City Council is looking for a Data Engineer Apprentice to join our Systems Integration & Data Team within ICT & Digital.
This is a fantastic opportunity to start a career in data while gaining hands‑on experience with real council systems, platforms, and data that support essential public services across the city.
As a Data Engineer Apprentice, you’ll learn how data is moved, prepared, and managed behind the scenes so that analysts, services, and leaders can rely on accurate, timely information to make better decisions.
What You’ll Be Doing
Working alongside experienced data engineers and technical colleagues, you will:
1. Support the ingestion and preparation of data from council systems into our corporate data platforms
2. Help build and maintain data pipelines and structured datasets
3. Assist with monitoring scheduled and overnight data processes
4. Log and manage data‑related incidents and requests through our service management system, working to agreed service levels
5. Support data analysts by ensuring datasets are reliable, well‑structured, and fit for reporting and analysis
6. Help maintain documentation so data flows and processes are clearly understood
7. Provide limited operational support for data integrations between core systems (such as payments into the financial system), acting as cover when required
8. Learn and apply data governance, security, and data protection principles
9. Complete an approved apprenticeship programme alongside your day‑to‑day role
This role includes a mix of project work, learning, and day‑to‑day operational support, giving you a strong foundation in data engineering within a public sector environment.
All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.
