Creating a space for discovery without boundaries helps us to turn our science into benefits for human health and the economy.**About the role**We’re looking for a hands‑on Full Stack Software/Python Engineer to play a key role in developing and supporting software that underpins scientific research and operational systems across the Francis Crick Institute.You’ll work closely with two principal software engineers to design, build and maintain production‑grade tools used daily by scientists and operations teams. Operating at the intersection of science, engineering and operations, you’ll collaborate with stakeholders to shape requirements and deliver scalable, practical solutions. Your work will include developing reporting tools, dashboards, APIs and shared Python libraries that support institute‑wide workflows.In this thriving, multidisciplinary team,you will contribute to software and AI driven tools that accelerate scientific discovery, while working closely with research groups, technology platforms and the enterprise IT organisation.**What you will be doing**You will:* Design and develop high-quality, maintainable software to meet project needs and deadlines* Support operations across the Crick by developing and maintaining supporting software such as libraries and APIs* Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders to define project requirements and technical specifications* Peer review and testing – by working closely with colleagues to maintain quality standards and provide code reviews* Ensure the security of software and applications - by developing in accordance with established security principles* Ensure ease of maintenance and sustainability - by developing, testing, releasing and documenting software using agreed best practices**About you**You will have:* Strong, demonstrable experience as a Python software engineer, writing production-quality code that is maintained and used by others\** Demonstrable experience writing and maintaining automated unit tests, with an understanding of how testing supports software correctness, refactoring, and long-term maintainability in production systems* Experience developing and supporting applications in Linux/Unix environments, including confident use of the command line* Experience working with containerised environments (e.g. Docker and/or Singularity) for development and deployment\** Experience maintaining or supporting deployed services or internal platforms, including troubleshooting and operational support* Evidence of understanding good software engineering practice, including OOP, version control (GIT), unit testing, documentation and release/deployment processes (CI & CD) and a commitment to web standards\** Experience with other technologies/languages, front end development and workflow orchestration or scheduling systems (desirable)Minimum criteria\***About Working at the Crick****Our values**Everyone who works at the Crick has a valuable role to play in advancing the Crick’s mission and shaping our culture* We are **bold**.
