Graduate (Commissioning)
@one Alliance, Anglian Water
Location: Hybrid across the East of England – office, home working, and site visits
We’re the @one Alliance – a ground-breaking collaboration between Anglian Water and seven industry-leading partners: Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Binnies, MMB, MWH Treatment, Skanska and SWECO. Together, we deliver over half of Anglian Water’s capital investment programme.
As we prepare for AMP8, our most ambitious period yet, we’ll be delivering an even broader range of innovative and environmentally-driven infrastructure projects – from urban drainage to nature-based solutions like constructed wetlands
As a Graduate Commissioning Engineer within the @one Alliance, you will play a vital role in bringing new water and water recycling assets safely and reliably into operation. Supported by experienced engineers, you will learn how to plan, test, optimise and hand over treatment plants and control systems, building the skills and exposure needed to achieve chartered status in your discipline.
What you will do
•Commissioning Phase Planning: Work with process engineers and planners to develop commissioning and sampling plans that integrate with construction milestones, define test durations, and secure stakeholder agreement on performance criteria. Contribute in design and progress meetings to ensure solutions can be commissioned efficiently and without customer impact.
•Health & Safety Excellence: Produce commissioning risk assessments, method statements and impact plans. Follow Safe To Commission procedures, anticipate hazards and ensure zero impact on supply quality and safety during commissioning activities.
•Project Delivery: Lead hands-on process commissioning under guidance—execute tests on automated control systems, carry out site acceptance testing to functional specifications, perform sampling and data analysis, train operations technicians and produce handover documentation. Liaise with Anglian Water operations teams for aftercare and ensure new assets are reliable, safe and fully documented.
•Collaboration and Continuous Improvement: Maintain close links with commissioning peers, design engineers, technical managers and operations to manage interfaces, share best practice and explore innovation. Contribute to wider @one Alliance initiatives, including digital transformation, wellbeing and inclusion.
Your development
You will receive structured support and mentorship from senior commissioning engineers. You will gain site experience, understand commercial factors, and learn digital tools that enhance design and commissioning quality. This role offers the experiences needed to progress towards chartered status in your chosen engineering discipline.
What we look for
•Degree in water/wastewater process science, engineering or related subject
•Membership (or working towards) of a relevant professional body
Skills & Behaviours
•Strong communication and collaboration skills; able to engage diverse stakeholders
•Good IT skills and willingness to adopt digital tools
•Proven problem-solving mindset, balancing analysis with practical action

What you can expect
•Hands-on commissioning experience on modern water and recycling assets
•Mentorship and training geared toward professional development and chartership
•Exposure to cross-disciplinary teams and engagement with operations, design and H&S
•Opportunity to contribute to sustainable, innovative projects in a water-stressed region
•Hybrid working model with office, home and site-based activity
•A culture that values inclusion, collaboration and continuous improvement
