Principal Engineer – Electrical Plant

Base Location: We're proud to offer a flexible approach to work, but your base 'home' location must be one of our SSEN offices or depots around Scotland, including Perth, Glasgow, Aberdeen, or Inverness.
Salary: £55,200 - £83,000 + car/car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing, and family.

The role
At SSEN Transmission, we're committed to powering the future with sustainable solutions as we work towards achieving Net Zero. We are looking for a Principal Engineer - Electrical Plant to lead in developing and maintaining cutting-edge electrical infrastructure.
You will
1. Write, maintain, review, and own technical specifications and guidance notes for all electrical primary plant (e.g., GIS/GIB, AIS CBs, Disconnectors, Earthing Switches, Instrument Transformers, Surge Arresters, MSCDN, Filters) used on the Transmission network.
2. Review test plans as part of the Technical Authority, ensuring all technology and equipment selected is adequately tested, proven, and validated.
3. Provide Subject Matter Expert input to design reviews and verify project proposals are fit for purpose.
4. Provide technical guidance to the transmission business for new plant and replacement, and to Operations regarding equipment capability or fault investigations.
5. Represent SSEN Transmission at industry events, working groups, and conferences.
You have
1. A degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant discipline and Chartered Engineer status or working towards it.
2. Demonstrable expert-level experience in the design, specification, and application of electrical plant such as AIS or GIS switchgear, instrument transformers, or FACTS/HVDC at transmission voltage levels of 132 kV and above.
3. Ability to technically assess issues and critically evaluate a range of technical solutions.
4. Detailed knowledge of international standards and transmission network owner specifications, along with experience in writing technical specifications and guidance notes.
5. Experience in designing, manufacturing, testing, installation, or maintenance of transmission voltage plant and equipment is advantageous.
