Postdoctoral Researcher – Methodology & Ethnography – Strand, London, WC2R 2LS

About Us

King’s College London is one of the UK’s leading research universities. The African Leadership Centre (ALC) is a dynamic unit based within the King’s School of Global Affairs (SGA). It delivers postgraduate teaching, doctoral training and academic research. The ALC focuses on the intellectual study of leadership within development, peacebuilding and security, with attention to Global South contexts, and works on climate change, sustainability and governance. ALC also has a base in Nairobi. This postdoctoral role is part of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship on justice in critical minerals governance across Australia, Chile and Ghana led by Dr Clement Sefa‑Nyarko.

About the Role

This role will support the methodological development of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship – Justice in Critical Minerals Governance and Energy Transitions – focusing on hermeneutical ethnography, visual embodiment methodologies and participatory research approaches.

The project addresses the urgent need to understand and integrate justice into global energy transitions, particularly in the governance of critical minerals. It aims to build a bottom‑up, data‑driven framework for justice that informs national policies and global climate agendas by applying hermeneutical ethnography in mining communities in Ghana, Chile and Australia.

Key Responsibilities

* Develop and refine research methodology, including hermeneutical ethnography and visual embodiment techniques.
* Plan, conduct and analyse field studies in mining communities.
* Train and mentor a small research staff across the project.
* Collaborate with international partners and support interdisciplinary collaboration.
* Support interdisciplinary research, including the translation of field findings into policy frameworks.

Qualifications & Experience>

* PhD in anthropology, sociology, geography or related discipline.
* Substantial experience in ethnographic fieldwork and qualitative data analysis.
* Experience with hermeneutical, visual or interpretable methodologies is desirable.
* Strong communication skills and experience working in an international research team.

Contract

* Full‑time, 35 hours per week.
* Fixed‑term contract for 3 years, starting with an initial one‑year contract renewable for up to 3 years.

Postdoctoral Research Associate – Photonics & Nanotechnology – Strand, London, WC2R 2LS

About Us

The Photonics & Nanotechnology group, Physics Department, King’s College London, is funded by the EPSRC Programme Grant “Catalysis meets plasmonics: New perspectives in photocatalysis and near‑surface chemistry”, a collaboration with Imperial College London and the UK Catalysis Hub.

Research focuses on advanced photonic technologies and novel nanomaterials for sustainability, nonlinear optics, photonic and quantum technologies, sensing, imaging and clean energy.

About the Role

Join the project to fabricate and investigate novel nanostructures for plasmonic catalysis and sensing based on nanoporous materials and super‑crystals. The role requires experience in fabrication of plasmonic nanostructures, optical characterisation and applications in sensing, photocatalysis and photo‑electrocatalysis.

Collaboration with Imperial College and the UK Catalysis Hub, as well as industry partners, is essential.

Oversee supervision of PhD and MSc students working on related topics.

Key Responsibilities

* Design and fabricate nanostructures for plasmonic catalysis.
* Conduct optical characterisation and test in catalytic and sensing applications.
* Collaborate with partners and industry stakeholders.
* Mentor and supervise junior researchers.

About the Role

Conduct experimental research on topological light fields, topological metamaterials and nonlinear optical phenomena. Candidate should have experience with vortex beams and nonlinear spectroscopy, and collaborate with Imperial College and the University of Exeter, plus industry partners.

Supervise PhD and MSc students.

Key Responsibilities

Research Assistant – Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine – Strand, London, WC2R 2LS

About Us

The School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS) pursues basic and translational research in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The School hosts 400 personnel and 110 PhD students, and focuses on four main themes: Cardiac, Vascular, Cardiometabolic, Diabetes & Obesity, with cross‑cutting themes Basic and Clinical.

About the Role

Assist in cardio‑immunology research focused on myocardial infarction and inflammation. Tasks include animal models, in‑vitro experiments and multi‑platform ‘omics’ approaches to delineate leucocyte signalling after myocardial infarction.

Contribute to all facets of the lab, manage specific work packages and collaborate in a multidisciplinary team.

About the Role

Focus on a family of actin‑binding proteins regulating the actin cytoskeleton. Core techniques include single‑particle cryo‑EM and in‑situ cryo‑electron tomography. Experience in cryo‑EM, cryo‑ET and fluorescence microscopy is essential.
