Job summary

Secondment will end April 2027 (approximately 12 months - dependent on start date).

The Retention Midwife will play a key role in supporting, developing, and retaining the midwifery workforce. The post holder will be a pivotal resource integrated alongside the senior midwifery team, midwifery practice educators, and Professional Midwifery Advocates (PMAs), working collaboratively to deliver targeted support for midwives across the service.

The role focuses on improving staff retention through the provision of high-quality professional, and pastoral guidance. The Retention Midwife will support midwives at various stages of their careers, experiencing professional or personal challenges. By fostering a supportive, inclusive, and compassionate working environment, the post holder will help enhance staff wellbeing, confidence, and job satisfaction.

This role will contribute to workforce sustainability by identifying retention risks, supporting flexible and innovative approaches to practice, and promoting professional development opportunities. The Retention Midwife will also play an important role in promoting safe, effective midwifery practice and a positive culture aligned with professional standards and organisational values.


Main duties of the job

The post holder willwork in collaboration withthe Professional Practice Team who work cohesively to develop and support the multi-professional team within maternity.Theteamincludes(but is notexclusive to)PDMswithspecificfocus, forexample onPreceptorship (PDMP),MaternitySupportWorkers,andEnhanced MaternalCare,FetalSurveillance Midwife, and Professional Midwifery Advocacy (PMA) services.
