Course Summary
This is a two-year programme of study. There will also be mock examinations in Year 12.
During the course, students will study a range of topics from Particles, Waves, Mechanics to Nuclear Physics. Students will also develop their practical skills and competency by completing a number of required practicals.
This course offers a breadth of topics that will complement both other Science A Levels such as Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths.
Course Details
Content is split into six teaching modules:
* Module 1 – Development of practical skills in physics
* Module 2 – Foundations of physics
* Module 3 – Forces and motion
* Module 4 – Electrons, waves and photons
* Module 5 – Newtonian world and astrophysics
* Module 6 – Particles and medical physics
Component 1 assesses content from modules 1, 2, 3 and 5.
Component 2 assesses content from modules 1, 2, 4 and 6.
Component 3 assesses content from all modules.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
There will be 3 written papers.
Paper 1 (Component 1) – Written Paper: 2 Hours 15 Minutes (37%)
Paper 2 (Component 2) – Written Paper: 2 Hours 15 Minutes (37%)
Paper 3 (Component 3) – Written Paper: 1 Hour 30 Minutes (26%)
There is also a non exam assessment in Practical Endorsement in physics.
Entry requirements
To study Physics at A Level, students on either the Combined Science or Separate Science GCSE programmes will be considered, but only if they sit the Higher Tier exams.
If students study Combined Science, they must achieve a 7-7 Grade or above, including a Grade 7 in P1 and P2.
If students study Separate Sciences, they must achieve a Grade 7 or above in GCSE Physics.
Students must also obtain a Grade 7 or above in GCSE Mathematics. For students from other schools, equivalent Science GCSE courses will be considered.
Equipment required
You will need a scientific calculator, lined paper or note book, pens, pencils and other common stationery.

Many scientific, technical and engineering jobs as well as courses of further education require or prefer A Level Physics of their entrants. Physics is recognised as a qualification which “says” a great deal about you as a person who holds it. In addition you will have a fascination for, and a depth of understanding of, things around you which is rare and of continuing value no matter what future path you choose. Previous students have gone into a wide range of courses including; Physics, Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedical Science, Computer Science, Engineering and non-Science courses.
