Reporting to the Camp Manager and working alongside a like-minded team of ratio'd staff, swimming teachers are responsible for planning and delivering safe, structured, fun, and active sessions to children aged between 5 and 17 during school holidays. Swim Teachers need to adapt for varying age and ability levels (children are grouped by age: 5-7, 8-10, 11-14, 15-17), focusing on developing water confidence and basic stroke skills. Our programme emphasizes getting children active through structured games and activities rather than traditional learn-to-swim lessons.
Safety is our top priority. Swim Teachers work closely with Lifeguards to prepare areas and equipment, manage risk assessments, monitor water conditions, and handle incidents. All staff and children must adhere to Kings Camps' Swimming Policy, venue Normal Operating Procedures, and Emergency Action Plan. Sessions typically last 30-45 minutes with up to 16 children per group, scheduled between 9:30 am and 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Staff supervise children during breaks, participate in sessions, oversee equipment safety, record incidents promptly, implement behaviour management policies, and uphold health and safety standards.
Minimum requirements include:
1. SEQ Level 2 or STA Level 2 Swimming Teacher certification.
2. At least 12 months' experience as a swim teacher.
3. Over 6 months' experience working with children aged 5-17.
4. (Desirable) Lifeguarding qualification such as NPLQ or NRASTC, with current certification.
5. A collaborative attitude, comfortable with rotating duties, and forming positive relationships with children, venue staff, parents, and colleagues.
6. Knowledge of risk assessments.
7. Ability to design, plan, and deliver safe, dynamic poolside sessions.
