Offer description

Salary £31,387 to £46,485 per annum, depending on skills and experience (minimum £35,608 with relevant PhD).

Location University Park, University of Nottingham, Medical School, Queen’s Medical Centre, UK.

Closing Date Monday 15 June 2026.

Reference MED459826.

Role Overview The Research Associate/Fellow will investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of meiosis in the malaria parasite Plasmodium as part of the BBSRC UKRI Frontier Science award “Meiosis in Plasmodium: how does it work?”. The position is based in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Nottingham and will work under the supervision of Dr David Guttery and Prof. Rita Tewari. The research focuses on parasite development within the mosquito vector using advanced genetic and cell‑biological approaches to determine how conserved meiotic regulators control parasite differentiation and transmission.
Conditional gene modulation strategies (CRISPR‑Cas9, DiCre, AID, promoter swap) will be combined with state‑of‑the‑art imaging (confocal, expansion, immunofluorescence) to generate mechanistic insight into parasite biology.

Responsibilities

* Conduct research on molecular and cellular mechanisms of meiosis in Plasmodium.
* Use conditional gene modulation strategies (CRISPR‑Cas9, DiCre, AID, promoter swap) for parasite development studies.
* Apply advanced imaging techniques such as confocal microscopy, expansion microscopy and immunofluorescence.
* Analyse and interpret experimental data.
* Contribute to training of undergraduate and postgraduate researchers.
* Disseminate findings through high‑quality publications and conference presentations.

Qualifications

* PhD (or nearing completion) in a relevant discipline.
* Experience in molecular and/or cell‑biology techniques.
* Strong analytical, organisational and communication skills.
* Experience in molecular cloning, genetic manipulation and advanced imaging approaches (confocal microscopy, expansion microscopy, SIM or related techniques).

Employment Details

Fixed‑term, full‑time (36.25 hours per week) appointment until 14 April 2027 with the possibility of a 5.5‑month extension, subject to funding.

Applications are accepted online only. Direct emails will not be accepted. For any questions, contact Dr David Guttery (David.Guttery@nottingham.ac.uk) or Prof. Rita Tewari (rita.tewari@nottingham.ac.uk).
