Freelance Project Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to support the successful delivery of ground investigation and enabling works for overhead power line projects as part of the UK's Great Grid Upgrade programme.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on nationally significant infrastructure projects that will play a key role in strengthening the UK's electricity transmission network.
Key Responsibilities:
Support the planning, coordination, and delivery of ground investigation and pre-construction activities for overhead line projects.
Manage engineering and technical aspects of site investigations, including boreholes, trial pits, geotechnical surveys, and environmental assessments.
Review and coordinate technical documentation, drawings, specifications, and reports.
Liaise with project managers, site teams, subcontractors, consultants, and National Grid stakeholders.
Monitor project progress, identify technical risks, and implement effective solutions.
Ensure works are delivered in accordance with National Grid standards, project specifications, and industry best practice.
Support programme management, cost control, and reporting activities.
Assist with health, safety, environmental, and quality compliance across all project activities.
Essential Requirements:
Proven experience as a Project Engineer within utilities, transmission, power, civil engineering, or major infrastructure projects.
Experience supporting the delivery of overhead line, transmission, or ground investigation works.
Strong understanding of engineering principles, construction methodologies, and site operations.
Ability to review technical information and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams.
Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable Qualifications:
Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
Experience working on National Grid projects or within the UK transmission sector.
Knowledge of National Grid procedures, standards, and project delivery requirements.
CSCS Card.
SMSTS, SSSTS, or relevant site safety qualifications.
