Deputy Clinical Lead Perioperative Care

The Deputy Clinical Lead for Post-Operative Recovery is a key leadership role within Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, supporting the delivery of safe, compassionate and effective perioperative care in line with CTM's values of listening, learning, improving, treating everyone with respect, and working together as one team. The post holder will contribute to high‑quality recovery care by providing clinical expertise, visible leadership and professional guidance to the multidisciplinary team.
This role supports the Clinical Lead in maintaining consistently high standards of post‑operative assessment, monitoring and intervention, ensuring patient safety remains central to every decision. The post holder will lead by example, acting as a credible role model, promoting evidence‑based practice, and ensuring the recovery environment is efficient, well‑organised and responsive to clinical demands.
The Deputy Clinical Lead will contribute to operational coordination, workforce planning, and day‑to‑day management within the recovery unit. They will promote a positive learning culture, supporting staff development, supervising students, and ensuring new and existing team members feel valued, supported and empowered.
Main duties of the job
The Deputy Clinical Lead for Post‑Operative Recovery provides visible clinical and managerial leadership to ensure safe, effective care for all patients emerging from anaesthesia. The role includes specialist assessments, monitoring complex patients, recognising deterioration, and delivering advanced post‑operative interventions in line with evidence‑based practice.
The post holder supports daily coordination of the recovery unit, including staff allocation, operational decision‑making, escalation of clinical concerns, and management of theatre flow. They will deputise for the Clinical Lead, maintaining continuity of service, safe staffing, and effective planning during routine and emergency activity.
Key duties include supervising and mentoring staff, supporting students and new practitioners, and promoting a positive learning environment. The role also ensures adherence to policies, LocSSIPs/NatSSIPs, infection‑prevention standards, and documentation requirements.
They will contribute to audits, data collection, equipment evaluation, and quality‑improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.
Effective communication with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team is essential, along with the ability to manage sensitive information and challenging situations professionally. The role supports delivery of a safe, high‑quality, patient‑centred recovery service.

Job responsibilities
We are seeking a committed and experienced perioperative practitioner to join our Post‑Operative Recovery team as a Band 6 Deputy Clinical Lead. The role involves delivering high‑quality postoperative care, supporting the coordination of the Recovery Unit and providing visible clinical leadership within a fast‑paced environment. You will contribute to safe staffing, effective theatre flow and maintaining high professional standards. The post holder will also support staff development through teaching, supervision and mentorship, while upholding CTM values and perioperative safety standards.

Welsh Skills Desirable: This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable. This does not mean essential; whilst the candidate doesn't need to have skills in Welsh, we will consider it an advantage when short‑listing and selecting candidates. This isn’t fluency, just Speaking & Listening skills at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above. Level 3 means basic conversations with patients about their everyday health. * Welsh Language Skills (Level 3 and above/B1) are Desirable for this Role.
