Job Summary
The Children's SEND Community Worker will provide 1:1 support to children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in community-based settings. The role is focused on enabling learners with high needs to access activities that build independence, promote personal and social development, and complement their educational journey.
The postholder will work creatively to engage learners in structured activities, vocational sessions, and independence-focused programmes, ensuring that every young person is supported to achieve positive outcomes and develop essential life skills.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver 1:1 support for children and young people with high levels of need in community settings.
* Plan and assist with structured activities and sessions that encourage independence, social interaction, and learning (e.g. travel training, budgeting, cooking, personal organisation).
* Support learners to engage in educational activities, including Functional Skills, vocational sessions, and life skills programmes.
* Promote inclusion by adapting activities to meet each learner's needs through differentiation, scaffolding, and multi-sensory approaches.
* Encourage and support learners to develop confidence, resilience, and independence.
* Work collaboratively with parents, carers, schools, and other professionals to ensure consistency of support.
* Record attendance, progress, and outcomes in line with organisational procedures.
* Follow safeguarding policies at all times, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all learners.
* Contribute to risk assessments and ensure activities are delivered in safe environments.
Person Specification
Essential:
* Experience working with children and young people, particularly those with SEND or high needs.
* Understanding of SEND learning approaches and strategies to promote independence.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with learners and families.
* Creative, flexible, and resilient approach to engaging young people in activities.
* Commitment to safeguarding, equality, and inclusion.
* Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across community settings.
Desirable:
* Knowledge of Functional Skills and vocational qualifications.
* Previous experience delivering independence or life-skills programmes.
* Relevant qualifications in education, youth work, or SEND support.
