The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join and develop an existing Practice Development Mental health service within acute services. Key Responsibilities

Provide high-quality, person-centred nursing care to patients experiencing acute mental and physical health crises, ensuring dignity and respect. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care in line with best practices and individualised recovery pathways. Monitor mental and physical health and respond proactively to any changes in condition or risk. Offer education and support to families, colleagues and carers, ensuring they feel informed and involved in the care process. Participate in clinical audits, continuing professional development, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes. Alongside operational hours there is the provision of continuous mental health learning and development. Successful applicants will be expected to engage in regular individual reflective practice through the clinical supervision process to facilitate personal and professional development within the role.

* Support the PDN in the delivery of professional mental health nursing practice as directed, ensuring delivery of care, which is consistently compassionate, safe, effective and person-centred.
* Support the PDN in the delivery of the Professional Nursing Work plan across acute services
* Evidence visible clinical presence by working regularly with inpatient staff delivering direct and indirect patient care.
* Actively participate in the maintenance and review of policies, guidance and protocols at Board, service and local level.
* Support acute staff to maintain high standards of quality record keeping in line with service and professional policy, standards and guidance.
* With PDN supervision provide clinical information to colleagues, patients and carers/relatives.
* With PDN supervision support activity associated with professional nursing standards and associated core audits.
* Understand professional regulation as described by the NMC to apply to self and other nursing staff to ensure practice is safe and competent.
* Work collaboratively with the PDN to promote high quality, compassionate care.
* Maintain effective lines of communication with all staff.
* With PDN supervision support staff development and assist in development programmes where appropriate.
* Identify and report any nursing practice deficits highlighted through audit, observation and/or reported by others to the PDN.
* Provide visible clinical presence.


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

* First level registered nurse (RN1/RNA and/or RN3/ RNMH) level 1 NMC registration
* Educated to degree level qualification
* Evidence of CPD with direct relevance to the responsibilities of the post
* Demonstrable experience of mental health nursing practice
* Knowledge of care and treatment for people with complex mental health care needs
* Knowledge of risk assessment/ risk management factors impacting on mental/physical health wellness and recovery for people with complex/ unstable care needs.
* Excellent communication skills
* Working within a multidisciplinary/multiagency framework


Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

These are fixed-term or secondment posts of 12 months. These 3x posts, 12-month secondments will consist of delivering support, guidance and ongoing learning to the acute nursing teams. The post will be based in the North of Glasgow covering Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Stobhill ACH and Lightburn Hospital sites. A full driving licence and own transport with the ability to travel across sites is essential for this role, as travel between the sites can be required at short notice.

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part‑time working hours will be reduced on a pro‑rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
