Pharmacy Technician – Stores and Distribution Manager

Job Description
We are looking for a motivated individual who can work calmly and accurately under pressure to lead our pharmacy Stores and Distribution team at the Princess Royal University Hospital.
Key Responsibilities
* Day‑to‑day management of the Pharmacy Procurement and Distribution Team under the direction of the Principal Technician – Procurement and Distribution.
* Managerial responsibility for the staff working in the Procurement and Distribution Team.
* Ensure efficient operation of pharmacy stores and distribution areas, including clinical top‑up service, stock control processes and GDP.
* Oversee cost‑effective ordering of medications for the hospital and external sites.
* Contribute to development and implementation of improvements to Pharmacy Procurement and Distribution Services.
Distribution and Storage Management
* Supervise daily activities of Pharmacy Procurement and Distribution Team ensuring effective storage and distribution.
* Organise and prepare monthly distribution service rota; address staffing concerns.
* Ensure Pharmacy Porters (KFM/ICS) complete required deliveries; notify Portering Managers if needed.
* Train staff in distribution, control, handling functions and Omnicell.
* Maintain Good Distribution Practice (GDP), including receipt, storage, and safe handling of all pharmaceuticals; conduct cycle counts and manage FMD.
* Ensure written SOPs are in place and regularly reviewed.
* Conduct pharmacy based cycle counts, ward based cycle counts for automated top‑up areas, stock rotation, medication level monitoring, monthly expiry checks.
* Update ward stock lists on Epic and Omnicell in response to changes such as contract amendments or shortages.
* Support medication shortage management via stock redistribution and Omnicell configuration updates.
* Maintain distribution schedules for wards, departments and community clinics; liaise with nursing staff.
* Manage the dispensing robot – clear errors, respond to hardware/software issues.
* Ensure staff in stores apply safe handling techniques for cytotoxic and flammable pharmaceuticals.
Staff Management & Training
* Act as a role model for pharmacy staff within Distribution and Procurement services.
* Line‑manage staff: appraisals, objective setting, sickness absence, disciplinary and grievance matters, recruitment and selection, and workload allocation.
* Undertake CPD to keep knowledge current in Pharmacy Distribution and Procurement services.
* Induct and train new Procurement and Distribution staff ensuring competency in procurement, distribution and relevant systems.
General Responsibilities
* Participate in a 7‑day pharmacy service, including weekends; participate in out‑of‑hours service where appropriate.
* Maintain satisfactory personal performances and professional standards; achieve objectives described in the Annual Staff Appraisal system.
* Carry out duties regarding the Fair Access Policy and respect cultural beliefs and customs of clients and staff.
* Ensure compliance with Health and Safety at Work Act and relevant legislation, local policies and procedures.
* Uphold Clinical Governance principles and comply with Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions of Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
* Undertake any other relevant duties required by the Director of Pharmacy.
* Maintain professional techniques, ethics, attitudes and procedures in staff management.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* NVQ Level 3 plus accredited underpinning knowledge (BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent) or equivalent.
* Professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
* Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practise.
Knowledge
* Regulations and legislation relevant to pharmaceutical purchasing, wholesale dealing.
* Regulations and legislation relevant to pharmacy distribution services.
* Pharmacy stock control procedures.
* Pharmacy computer systems.
Experience
* Significant post‑registration experience in hospital pharmacy or equivalent area of practice.
* Significant experience in Pharmacy Procurement and Distribution.
* Experience in stock control management.
* Experience using pharmacy computer systems to issue and manage pharmaceuticals.
* Experience working with senior healthcare professionals outside of Pharmacy.
* Experience managing teams.
* Experience with Epic, Omnicell and Dispensing Robot systems.

Salary
£45,953 to £54,254 a year, including high‑cost allowance.
