What skills and experience we're looking for

Required for September 2026, we are seeking an outstanding and committed teacher of Physical Education to join our welcoming, happy and oversubscribed school in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

The successful candidate will:

* Teach Physical Education across the full age and ability range, including GCSE
* Demonstrate a proven ability to deliver consistently high‑quality teaching, securing excellent outcomes for all pupils
* Show enthusiasm for whole‑school development
* Contribute positively to our extra‑curricular programme
* Have high expectations of themselves, colleagues and students
* Display excellent communication and team‑working skills
* Be ambitious for their own professional learning and career development

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a supportive and collegiate staff team, in a school that places pupils’ wellbeing, achievement and personal development at the heart of everything we do.

What the school offers its staff

About the School

We are an outstanding rural high school located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, offering a unique opportunity to work in an exceptional educational and natural environment. The local area provides superb opportunities for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits, while also being within easy reach of vibrant and culturally rich towns and cities.

Situated just ten minutes from the centre of Skipton, the school is surrounded by the stunning landscape of Upper Wharfedale. The school sits at the heart of its community, with facilities open during evenings and weekends to provide activities and enrichment opportunities for local young people and their families.

Regular public transport serves the area, enabling staff and students to travel easily from surrounding towns and villages. The Dales is a truly exceptional place to live and work, with the nearby town of Grassington, famously known as the setting for the fictional Darrowby in All Creatures Great and Small.

Our Students and Community

Upper Wharfedale School is inclusive and heavily oversubscribed, welcoming students from a rural catchment area covering over 200 square miles. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and demonstrate diverse abilities, talents and aspirations.

We are extremely proud of our consistently excellent outcomes at Key Stage 4, with student progress placing us in the top 7% of schools nationally. High academic expectations sit alongside a strong commitment to students’ personal development and wellbeing.

Our Staff and Ethos

Staff wellbeing is central to the ethos and daily life of the school. We are proud adopters of the Department for Education Wellbeing Charter, and we work hard to ensure that all staff feel valued, supported and cared for.

Although we are a small school, we benefit from innovative and efficient IT systems that support teaching, communication and collaboration, enabling staff to focus on what matters most – students and learning.

Professional learning and development are a high priority. We are committed to supporting all staff to pursue areas of professional interest and to prepare confidently for the next stage of their career.

The Role

This is a part‑time position (0.4–0.6 FTE), equivalent to two to three days per week.

For a PE specialist, the role offers excellent opportunities, including strong links with Rugby Union and access to a 20‑metre indoor swimming pool.

No two days are the same, and we are seeking an enthusiastic, flexible and committed team player who is keen to contribute fully to school life.

Commitment to safeguarding

Our organisation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff, volunteers and trustees to share this commitment. Our recruitment process follows the keeping children safe in education guidance. Offers of employment may be subject to the following checks (where relevant): childcare disqualification, Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) medical online and social media prohibition from teaching, right to work, satisfactory references, suitability to work with children. You must tell us about any unspent conviction, cautions, reprimands or warnings under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975.
