Summary
The Institution of Engineering and Technology is a multidisciplinary professional engineering organisation. They are working to transform into a more joined-up, member and customer-centric organisation across its various divisions. The board have decided to take the opportunity to create an opening at Executive level for a strategic Operations Director, who will report directly to the institution’s CEO, Ed Almond. With a high level of change in the IET`s sector, and society increasingly looking towards engineering and technology for solutions to issues such as climate change, the IET has been undertaking a transformation aimed at ensuring the organisation is fit for the future, financially robust and able to grow its impact. With the support of the Trustees they have changed the operating model to focus more effectively on their members and customers, committed to product development and have begun the journey to revitalise their systems and processes. This therefore represents an exciting time to join the highly motivated Executive team at the IET and contribute to ensuring the organisation is on a growth trajectory and ‘best in class’.
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of the Operations Director is to drive operational efficiency and effectiveness and enhance the customer and member experience within a governance framework. This role requires a strategic leader with a strong background in managing operations relevant to membership organisations that include commercial solutions and services to members and customers. The Operations Director is a member of the Executive Team who, together with the Chief Executive and Secretary, are responsible for the day-to-day management and strategic delivery for the IET. The Executive team operates collaboratively, with shared objectives, to deliver the best possible outcomes for the IET, including inspiring and developing staff colleagues, and ensuring the Trustees and volunteers can be effective in their roles to ensure long-term financial sustainability for the IET and its members.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop and implement operational strategies to improve efficiency and effectiveness across the operational teams.
* Oversee day-to-day operations, delivering best practice and driving a continuous improvement culture across standards, regulatory, publishing and events portfolios to streamline processes, enhancing and delivering cost-effective services.
* Lead and manage a team of operations professionals, providing guidance and support to achieve departmental goals.
* Work closely with Engagement and Growth, Portfolio and Product Management and IT teams to collaborate, respond and enhance the overall customer experience
* Bring external insight to ‘operations best practice’, applying knowledge and expertise from both membership and commercial operations to enhance the overall customer experience.
* Monitor and analyse operational performance metrics, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions.
* Manage budgets and resources effectively to achieve operational objectives, utlising and ensuring effective external supplier management
* Champion the One IET approach and continue to foster cross-organisation collaboration.
* Ensure compliance with all regulatory and governance requirements, maintaining the highest standards of integrity and transparency.
* Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including our volunteers and trustees, fostering trust and collaboration.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field.
* Proven experience in an operations leadership role ideally within a membership organisation (or similar) with commercial services and solutions, that include regulatory framework delivery, publishing, events delivery and venues management.
* Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements
* Proven operational delivery of commercial publishing services ideally within a membership organisation
* Excellent strategic planning and organizational skills.
* Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate teams.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
