The role
We’re seeking a qualified UK Chartered and/or European patent attorney to join our patents team. In this role, you will collaborate with the wider IP team, Innovation and Procurement functions, and external counsel to effectively build and oversee the Group’s patent portfolios while managing IP risk. The ideal candidate is a commercially astute individual with strong communication skills, capable of engaging with a diverse group of stakeholders, including technical experts, project teams, and external counsel, on various patent-related matters such as idea captures, patent filings and prosecution, oppositions, portfolio management, and FTO exercises. As Patent Counsel, you'll join an inclusive, innovative global FMCG business supported by 25,000 employees.
Key accountabilities
· Build value for Imperial Brands by facilitating securing prompt, efficient and comprehensive idea capture from the Group’s innovation teams
· Collaborate closely with other members of the Group IP team and external attorneys on patent filing, prosecution, opposition, and FTO matters
· Work in tandem with other members of the Group IP team to maintain an effective patent portfolio aligned with the Group’s filing practices and strategy
· Support FTO exercises related to R&D projects and proposed product launches or acquisitions
· Oversee landscape studies to support discovery and early-stage R&D projects
· Conduct training sessions for R&D team members on patentability and FTO issues
Skills & experience
· Experience in patent filing, prosecution, oppositions, and FTO exercises
· Qualified UK Chartered and/or European patent attorney
· Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders
· Strong commercial acumen
· High levels of organisation, accuracy, and attention to detail
