Go back Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust

Optometrist Specialising in Glaucoma and Cornea

The closing date is 05 April 2026

An opportunity has arisen for motivated and enthusiastic Optometrist to join our multidisciplinary team of Consultant Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Orthoptists, Ophthalmic Nurses and Health Care colleagues providing Eye Care services across Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

There are opportunities to provide core and specialist Optometry clinics on part-time basis depending on experience and service need.

These sessions would suit an Optometrist who has or would like to gain specialist experience within a hospital setting working with the corneal and/ glaucoma teams.

The department is keen on professional development and supports the teaching of junior doctors, physician associates, pre-reg Optometrists, Orthoptic Undergraduates and other healthcare professionals so a teaching qualification would be desirable.

The Ophthalmology, Orthoptic and Optometry Departments are based within Calderdale Royal Hospital (Halifax) and Acre Mills Out-patients (opposite Huddersfield Royal Infirmary).

About us

We employ more than 6,500 staff who deliver compassionate care from our two main hospitals, Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary as well as in community sites, health centres and in patients' homes. We also are incredibly proud to have almost 150 volunteers here at CHFT.

We provide a range of services including urgent and emergency care; medical; surgical; maternity; gynaecology; critical care; children's and young people's services; end of life care and outpatient and diagnostic imaging services.

We provide community health services, including sexual health services in Calderdale from Calderdale Royal and local health centres. These include Todmorden Health Centre and Broad Street Plaza.

We continue to modernise and invest in our health services to build on our strong reputation. Foundation trusts are public leaders in improving quality in health services. They are part of the NHS - yet decisions about what they do and how they do it are driven by independent boards. Boards listen to their Council of Governors and respond to the needs of their members - patients, staff and the local community.

Foundation trusts provide what the health service wants, yet are also free to invest quickly in the changes to the local community needs, in striving to be the best, and in putting their patients first.

Job responsibilities

You will be required to provide a range of Specialist Optometric services primarily within the Corneal Service which provides the opportunity to perform refraction as well as undertaking training to enable advancement of clinical skills to support consultant keratoconus clinics. Opportunities within the glaucoma service are also available dependant on experience. Core optometry providing paediatric and adult refraction will also be required. Opportunities to take part in active audit and research will also arise.
