Job Description
If you’re part of the Environment Agency (EA), you’re part of the solution. Together, we’ll promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and secure a better future for everyone.
We’re looking for enthusiastic, highly motivated individuals to join our Permitting teams. During your time with us you’ll help create a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment.
You’ll assess applications for a range of environmental permitted activities for regulated industry installations over a range of sectors across the country.
Environmental Permits set out the responsibilities and limitations on the activities we regulate. You’ll carry out technical assessments according to EA processes and regulatory obligations, to protect the environment and local communities.
The role requires you to be able to manage a busy workload assessing a suite of applications at any one time. You’ll pro-actively manage your own workload, seeking support and escalating issues as appropriate, to deliver high quality and risk-based environmental permitting decisions to deadlines. To achieve this, you’ll have excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with customers. You must be prepared to have difficult conversations with customers and be able to clearly explain your decisions.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. Everyone that joins us is required to undertake training and participate in incident response duties when the need to respond arises. Having an incident role is an essential part of working for the Environment Agency and an active way to support communities and prevent harm to the environment.Further information on incident response can be found within your candidate pack.
As an organisation we strive to reflect the communities we serve, to achieve this we welcome applications from all backgrounds regardless of race, sexual orientation, and religion. We also welcome applications for part-time hours.
The team
Our Teams
Permitting is the foundation of regulation, and crucial to the economy, people and wildlife. The Installations teams determine applications for sectors including food and drink, intensive farming, incineration, combustion, chemicals, waste and landfill. This could also include sites of high public interest and nationally significant infrastructure projects.
NPS work together across nationally and in friendly, helpful and supportive teams.
Experience/skills Required
Whilst relevant work experience would be an advantage, we are also looking for key transferrable skills and personal qualities. Experience of environmental permitting and scientific qualifications is preferable; however, we’re looking for candidates with a genuine passion for the environment and who are keen to protect it by regulating damaging activities.
Contact and additional information
If you would like to know more about the role, please join our information call on Wednesday 14th May at 12:30PM. To join the call or if you have any questions, please email NPS.Installations.Recruitment@environment-agency.gov.uk.
If problems arise with the recruitment-system, contact the recruitment-team on 0845 241 5350 or email ea_recruitment@gov.sscl.com.
All assessments and interviews will be carried out using the online-platform MS Teams.
Interviews are scheduled to take place mid June 2025.
Base location can be flexible (any of the Permitting Hubs – listed in City/Town) but with an expectation of occasional co-location and travel to meetings at offices/venues across the country. Our hybrid working model combines home and office working; however, you will be expected to attend the office for 20% of your time.
