The Role
We are seeking experienced industry professionals to join our team as Technical Assessors for new construction under the Pressure Equipment Safety Regulation (PESR) and Pressure Equipment Directive (PED). As a Technical Assessor, you will:
* Conduct technical assessments of organisations and products to ensure compliance with PESR and PED and associated regulations.
* Evaluate technical competence, processes, and practices against relevant standards (e.g. PD 5500, ISO 9001).
* Review documentation, procedures, and records, and report findings objectively.
* Provide constructive feedback to organisations, supporting continual improvement.
* Work flexibly on a freelance basis, alongside your current employment if desired.
What We’re Looking For
Essential
* Higher education in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline (e.g. mechanical engineering, materials science, welding technology).
* Significant hands‑on experience in the design, manufacture, inspection and testing of pressure equipment, including familiarity with fabrication techniques, welding procedures, and material selection.
* Working knowledge of the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) and Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations (PER) conformity assessment requirements and implementing regulations.
* Familiarity with standards used for evaluation, including PD 5500, ISO 9001, and relevant EN standards.
* Ability to interpret and apply technical requirements within a conformity assessment context.
* Understanding of accreditation criteria (e.g. ISO/IEC 17020, ISO/IEC 17065, ISO/IEC 17024 and ISO/IEC 17021‑1) is an advantage.
Desirable
* Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant field.
* Corporate membership of a recognised professional institution (e.g. IMechE, IOM3, TWI).
* Previous experience working with or within a Notified Body or accredited inspection/certification body.
Skills & Experience
1. Strong technical judgement and analytical skills.
2. Experience with conformity assessment modules (e.g. QA Module D, Module B).
3. Ability to acquire and maintain knowledge of Directives, Regulations, and Modules through training or self‑study.
4. Excellent communication and reporting skills, with the ability to present findings clearly and professionally.
Contract Details
* Freelance/subcontractor engagement, not a permanent role.
* Competitive daily fee, covering preparation, on‑site assessment, and reporting.
* All contracted assessors are expected to maintain Continuing Professional Development (CPD) relevant to their sector.
