Based in the Physical Activity & Health Team, the Senior Coordinator Physical Activity, Health and Community is a new role that has been created as a result of Sport England funding with the intention of activating new and refurbished physical activity sites in the city in partnership with communities and partners.

Our focus is rooted in involving local people, community groups and partners in specific localities to support change through co-design. We are grounded in action and discovery, driven by data and intelligence. From shifting the way people think, to the evolution of and introduction of programmes.

You will need to be highly motivated, with a curious, bold and innovative approach and have excellent organisational and communication skills. You will need to be agile and proactive, using reflective practice to develop your approach(es) and behaviours and when converting insight into tangible action. You need to be able use negotiation and influencing skills and build strong and sincere relationships to drive positive change and improve outcomes for the people of Derby.

The Opportunity
In the role of Senior Coordinator Physical Activity, Health and Community, here’s an example of what you’ll be doing to make an impact:


Recently Derby has received funding to make improvements to physical activity infrastructure across the city especially in Parks and open spaces. These include PlayZones, refurbished tennis courts as well as larger facilities such as the Football Hub at the Racecourse.

The Senior Coordinator will oversee, develop and deliver the Multi Sport Strategic fund project. The role will be responsible for working with a wide range of stakeholders including communities to ensure newly built facilities are accessible, used and owned by those communities they serve. This will be done in conjunction with other providers in the city making sure what is offered within these facilities is complimentary rather than competitive.

The key focus of this role will be activation of these new activity sites; maximising usage and involvement by underrepresented groups low-income communities, ethnic minorities, women and girls, disabled people) and create sustainable and equitable use of community sport facilities. This will also include elements of project and workforce development.


As well as effective operational management the role is required to stimulate and foster strong relationships with stakeholders including residents, community organisations, public bodies and commercial organisations. The postholder will also form part of the city council’s locality working plan and be a conduit between the service and the Neighbourhood team.

About You
To be successful in this role, you’ll ideally have...

The ability and experience to passionately and effectively lead, empower and motivate others

The ability to influence and negotiate whilst ensuring community voice is heard and need are met

Strong partnership working, grounded in collaboration and co-produced opportunities, programmes and sustainable solutions – especially within complex systems

Confidence to seek out and interpret insight, data and intelligence that converts into successful actions that achieve locally identified outcomes

Effective advocacy skills that can champion resident led discoveries

Operational experience of project management including managing budgets

A Higher National Diploma / Degree level qualification or equivalent experience in a related discipline sports, physical activity, community health development etc

Qualification(s) in behaviour change techniques including Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behaviour Theory type approaches.
