Open goal to Partner, in a TRUE partnership, and consistently busy disputes/forensic function
Your new company
Ive helped this client build out their incredibly successful, busy, and consistently growing Forensic team and am delighted they are now ready to bring in a de facto partner designate. More on that below. The firm is full-service accounting/advisory with impressive year-on-year growth (mainly organic with the occasional acquisition) but with very few conflicts and a track record of growing successful Advisory businesses (I can give an example of a JV acquired a few years ago which became the landing point for a key US firm in the UK.) There is a whole-firm culture around career sponsorship, so your mentor/s are not "just" a key Partner in your own team. Nonetheless, the lead Forensic Partner is a great example of someone who deliberately chose to leave a large firm at Director level and has achieved Expert, Partner and now equity Partner all within this firm. They have given evidence many times now, and as a "new gen" Partner will be the ideal role model to guide you through the same path.
The Forensic/Valuations team attracts a really broad range of mandates across quantum/damages, valuation (contentious and non-contentious) and investigations. The average size of law firm referring has increased significantly in recent times and in consequence firms "on the other side" are typically larger too. I can speak to the calibre of the delivery team, many of whom have deliberately chosen to join from bigger firms to accelerate their progress.
Business development activities for the team lean towards imaginative and creative as opposed to "flashy" and client take-up is high as a result.
Your new role
The firm are now keen to engage with a Disputes Director who is off the starting blocks on billing in their own name. Youre likely to be attracting mandates from your own contacts (even if then conflicted) as well as generating repeat business via high calibre output from others. The threshold here for Partnership is more accessible than in a Top 10 or equivalent independent consulting firm, so if youre already "washing your face" in self-generated billings, it may only take a multiple of 2-3 times that to be in the conversation for 1st-rung partner. What youll need to succeed
ACA or equivalent
UK-trained and experienced Forensic accountant, with an experience lean towards disputes/damages/valuation
A real desire to become a fully-fledged Expert in your own name
The confidence to build business and the commerciality to succeed
