Cardiac Nurse Specialist Cardiothoracic Transplant Team

Band 6 Full-time

Are you looking for a new dynamic & different nursing challenge working within the cardiothoracic transplant team caring for children at all stages of their transplant journey. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced children’s nurse, with some cardiac or respiratory experience to join our current team of Transplant Nurse Specialists.

We are looking for a children’s nurse with vision and enthusiasm, to contribute to the continued quality and the developmental success of the service and with a commitment to children and families, both internal and external to the service.



Main duties of the job

The role includes care co-ordination and support of the transplant patient throughout their journey. You will become a specialist resource to children, their families and other shared care professionals ensuring the wellbeing and optimal physical management of our complex patient group which includes both heart and lung transplant patients pre and post-surgery.

You will need to work closely with the other members of the transplant multi- disciplinary team, cardiothoracic theatre teams, allied health professionals and local children’s community services. You need to be confident in working with families, both internal and external to the trust.

We will develop your skills in face to face and remote assessment and management of the transplant patient which will support your decision making and escalation of care. We will support your professional development with a tailored individual educational pathway to develop your expertise in cardiothoracic transplant. You will also be working independently as a transplant recipient coordinator with close mentoring by the senior nursing team.

Essential criteria

* On the relevant part of the NMC Register. Part 8 or 15
* Evidence of on-going, dynamic continuing professional development within the specialty, linked to demonstrable clinical competencies
* Assessing and mentoring qualification
* Possession of a relevant degree or in the process of obtaining


Experience/Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Good knowledge relevant to the specialty/ department / field of practice
* Understanding of professional and current issues in children’s nursing and healthcare, NSF, NHS Plan and modernisation agenda, the Kennedy Report and Laming Report
* Understanding of Clinical Risk Clinical Governance
* Understanding of how to handle clinical incidents and complaints
* Demonstrates an understanding of the role of the specialist nurse and fit for the role within the service.
* Demonstrable year at Band 6, or equivalent essential, including experience within relevant clinical environment
* Experience of taking charge of a ward or ICU


Desirable criteria

* Understanding of audit and research methodologies
* Understanding of resource management, health and safety, clinical risk and quality issues
* Previous experience of change management and problem solving2

* Excellent relevant paediatric clinical skills
* Relevant specialist skills and abilities for the department/specialty ITU
* Ability to delegate and prioritise
* Excellent verbal and written communication and listening skills
* Excellent teaching, training and preceptorship skills
* Able to work across professional team and organizational boundaries
* Computer literate (word processing, PowerPoint presentation)
