Overview

Clinical Psychologist / Neuropsychologist (0.6 WTE). The Head Injury Therapy Unit is a community-based neurorehabilitation service supporting adults with acquired brain injury. The team includes neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation support workers, and assistant psychologists. Work is primarily conducted in patients’ homes and outpatient settings, focusing on functional, life-enhancing goals. Regular travel across the local area is required; access to transport is essential.

The post is part of the Neurological & Musculoskeletal (NMSK) Division at North Bristol NHS Trust, within the Department of Neuropsychology, serving clinical, academic, and research departments. Responsibilities

* Provide specialist neuropsychology input for patients with acquired brain injury referred to the Head Injury Therapy Unit; may support other adult neuropsychology services as needed.
* Deliver comprehensive neuropsychological assessments, rehabilitation, and therapy; produce accurate, timely reports.
* Communicate effectively with patients, families, multidisciplinary teams, referrers, and external agencies through individual sessions, formal reports, and clinical meetings.
* Liaise with internal colleagues and external agencies (GPs, social care, government bodies, employers, educational institutions) to manage neuropsychological aspects of patient care.
* Manage, plan, and prioritise the clinical caseload with guidance from the Clinical Lead; travel regularly across the locality is essential.
* Stay up to date with the brain injury rehabilitation evidence; advise on new initiatives and treatments; contribute to in-house multidisciplinary training.
* Provide supervision to assistant psychologists as required and plan the monthly schedule of patients with the HITU MDT to optimise clinic access.
* Ensure the security of psychological test materials, computers, and office equipment; supervise adherence to security rules by other staff (e.g., assistant psychologists).
* Use computer software for short reports and urgent correspondence; create spreadsheets for test scoring, interpretation, and data management as required.
* Interpret and implement policies from professional ethics and service needs in consultation with the Clinical Lead.
* Utilise IT infrastructure (video calls, cloud-based resources) to support service delivery.
* Identify needs within the service, communicate with the Clinical Lead, and contribute to service development and problem resolution.
* Occasionally present research and relevant lectures to the Neuroscience community to promote the Trust and the Neuropsychology Department.
* Make clinical decisions (diagnosis, formulation, treatment options) based on a range of information and best available evidence; operate on a case-by-case basis where guidelines may be limited.
* Be flexible in caseload management to accommodate urgent cases; liaise with the assistant psychologist to maximise service efficiency.
* Contribute to safeguarding; respond to potential child protection issues in line with Trust guidelines and multidisciplinary practices.
* Promote and participate in in-house multidisciplinary training and professional development.
* Plan the monthly schedule of patients and coordinate access to clinic rooms with colleagues and the HITU team.
* Occasionally present research/lectures to the Neuroscience community to support external profile and collaboration.


Qualifications and Requirements

* Postgraduate qualification in clinical psychology or neuropsychology with eligibility for professional registration as appropriate; relevant neuropsychology endorsement or equivalent.
* Experience assessing and managing cognitive and physical impairments following acute neurological events (e.g., traumatic brain injury) or other neurological conditions.
* Experience working within a multidisciplinary team and delivering neuropsychology services in community/home-based settings.
* Ability to travel regularly within the local area; access to transport is essential.
* Excellent communication skills with patients, families, and professional colleagues; ability to prepare clear reports and liaise with external agencies.
* Commitment to continuing professional development and contributing to training and research activities.
