Overview

Design Manager - Engineering and Assurance / Geotechnical Works / Enabling and Earthworks for Sizewell C, Suffolk. Site-based role within the Civil Works Alliance (CWA) delivering a 3.2 GW nuclear power station project that provides low-carbon electricity for six million homes over 60 years.

The Civil Works Alliance is a delivery organisation formed by Sizewell C and three international construction companies: Balfour Beatty, Bouygues Travaux Publics and Laing O’Rourke. The alliance brings together extensive experience from major complex infrastructure programmes worldwide.

What you’ll be doing

The Sizewell C project requires a Design Manager to work within the Enabling Works portion of the Civil Works Alliance. You will coordinate and manage the review and acceptance of engineering design deliverables, ensuring compliance with Client and regulatory requirements, with a sustained focus on constructability and the transfer of risk from Designer to Contractor.

Your responsibilities include implementing and ensuring understanding of the design management procedure across the project team, and establishing effective arrangements to identify, manage and resolve design issues and interfaces. This includes package-specific temporary and permanent works design interfaces and complex package interfaces for a major multi-disciplinary infrastructure programme.

The project team comprises the Client, the wider CWA, the Client’s Designer, internal and external temporary work designers, and subcontractors.

Responsibilities

* Implement and manage design strategies and processes for planning and constructing major civil, structural and tunnelling works, with emphasis on technical coordination and construction management.
* Engage with stakeholders on design, interfacing designers, package leads and subcontractor designers.
* Lead IDR/IDC meetings, workshops and presentations.
* Manage multiple interfaces and drive team performance.
* Apply knowledge of health and safety legislation and CDM 2015 Regulations.
* Understand project lifecycles, governance and risk management.
* Communicate effectively, listening and explaining to gain agreement on project best interests.
* Demonstrate teamwork, leadership and proactivity with the project team, client and stakeholders.
* Produce sketches to support proposals and scope documents where needed.
* Use AutoCAD or similar software to work autonomously without a dedicated draftsman.
* Proficient in Office, with advanced Excel capabilities; experience with 3D/4D modelling for industrial applications.
* Experience with design review processes, model management and BIM clash detection.
* Implement the Project Design Management Plan, BIM Execution Plan and related documents.
* Collaborate effectively in a contractor environment and demonstrate IT proficiency and numeracy.
* Build strong relationships with project team, supply chain partners and clients under time pressure.
* Deliver high-quality products to tight deadlines.
* Engineering-based degree with professional qualification or progress toward it.
* Major project construction experience with design production/coordination for civil, structural and tunnelling works in a contractor-led environment.
* Geotechnical or foundation experience is a plus.

Benefits

* Smart working with flexible start/finish times and up to 40% remote working where roles allow.
* 25 days of paid annual leave (pro rata).
* Family-friendly policies including 28 weeks full pay for maternity/adoption leave and four weeks full pay for paternity/partner leave.
* Pension, share incentive plan, volunteering leave, recognition schemes and more.
