This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills and experience by joining the team as a Victoria Wharf Port Operative Apprentice. An Apprenticeship gives you the opportunities and support to develop new work-placed skills in an organisation committed to your professional development and success.
Port operatives may be involved in:
* Loading, unloading, handling and securing cargo (including general, bulk, project, liquid and freight containers).
* Warehousing, storage and retrieval, e.g. checking, marking and despatching cargo.
* On-shore mooring and vessel handling operations.
* Workplace transport operations, e.g. directing and moving driving vehicles/cargo.
* Operate heavy machinery, operate specialised port operating equipment (such as ship-to-shore container and general cargo cranes, conveyor belts/suction pipes for grain and pipelines for oil tankers) and lifting and handling equipment (such as mobile cranes, lift trucks, materials handlers, straddle carriers, reach stackers etc.)
As a Victoria Wharf Apprentice, we commit to 20% off-the-job training with SeaRegs Training in Plymouth as part of your role alongside your normal day-to-day job. As an apprentice, your training includes study and examinations during and at the end of your Apprenticeship. You will need to commit to undertaking these to the best of your ability.
Apprentice requirements:
Ideally, due to the nature of the work and for perception of risk, the apprentice should be aged over 17 years and has or is working towards having a full and clean driving licence, driving of heavy plant and machinery will be part of the core functions.
The ideal candidate should live locally to Plymouth, is fully fit as manual handling is part of the role, and while our core hours are, they must be flexible to meet the operational tempo of the wharf; therefore, working outside of these core hours and weekend work is essential and will be re-numerated accordingly.
Victoria Wharf in Plymouth:
The port handles vessels up to 25.5m beam and a maximum length of up to 140m and offers extensive open storage and 90,000sq ft of covered storage and modern cargo handling equipment to enable quick dispatch of vessels.
Victoria Wharf also assists with project cargo and supports local construction projects with import and export for distribution of materials and access to quays for crane barge mobilisation.
The mooring team
The port and mooring team are very important to the safety of the vessels using the port. They are a small team responsible for secure mooring, preparing safe access and loading, unloading, and securing freight.
