The Opportunity
We are currently recruiting on behalf of our client for an experienced Health & Safety Compliance Manager to join their team. This is a key position reporting directly to the Managing Director, offering the successful candidate the opportunity to take ownership of Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) compliance across a multi-site operation.
This role is ideal for a hands-on H&S professional with strong working knowledge of UK legislation, ideally gained within an engineering, forklift, or transport environment.
The Role
As Health & Safety Compliance Manager, you will provide professional guidance and practical support across all operational HSE activities, ensuring compliance, continuous improvement, and best practice throughout the business.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Developing, implementing and maintaining HSE systems and plans in line with legal requirements and internal standards.
2. Ensuring all risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work are completed, communicated and maintained.
3. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date compliance records, including H&S files, Fire Safety, DSEAR, RIDDOR, COSHH and risk registers.
4. Managing site management systems and compliance processes.
5. Overseeing day-to-day HSE compliance across office, workshop, paint shop and depot environments.
6. Planning and coordinating statutory inspections and site maintenance, including ladders, ramps, paint booths, roller shutters, emergency lighting and fire extinguishers.
7. Managing environmental compliance and waste management, including waste carrier licences.
8. Overseeing health surveillance programmes for engineers and paint shop staff.
9. Working closely with the Managing Director to identify and coordinate all health and safety training requirements.
10. Delivering Health & Saftey training and guidance to employees and site contractors.
11. Maintaining and reviewing company policies and procedures.
12. Acting as the main point of contact for contractors and suppliers, ensuring compliance and insurance documentation is in place.
13. Managing new starter Health & Saftey inductions and maintaining the employee handbook.
14. Supporting transport compliance, including oversight of three company HGVs and quarterly DVLA licence checks.
15. Managing and renewing accreditations such as Safe Contractor and annual memberships.
16. Leading internal audits, inspections and compliance reporting.
The Candidate
Our client is looking for a candidate who can demonstrate:
17. A NEBOSH qualification or equivalent (Fire Safety qualification desirable).
18. Proven experience in an operational Health, Safety and Environment role.
19. Experience working within the engineering, forklift and/or transport industry.
20. Strong and up-to-date knowledge of UK Health, Safety and Environmental legislation.
21. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage at all levels of the business.
22. Strong organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
23. A proactive, hands-on approach with the confidence to work independently.
