Location: On-site working at our state of the art labs in Bristol, UK. Start Date: March - May 2026 Eligibility: Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK to apply for this role. Role Responsibilities: We are seeking a constantly inquisitive, creative and broadly skilled Mechanical Engineer to assist in developing active systems to operate within GenomeKey’s innovative ecosystem. You will be working alongside a talented and dedicated team of engineers and scientists working on exciting products with real world, life saving applications. Your responsibilities will include: Developing mechanical actuation and control methods for GenomeKey’s automated biochemical processing platform, supporting the transition from research prototypes to integrated systems and devices and subsequent optimisation. Collaborating with engineering and scientific colleagues to ensure robust system-level integration. Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies including enclosures, internal frames, cartridge interfaces, and precision mechanisms, including miniaturised versions of the same. Apply DfMA principles to enable scalable, cost-effective production. Support prototyping activities, including hands-on build, modification, and iteration of mechanical designs. Support development and maintenance of mechanical design documentation in line with design control requirements. Participate in risk management activities, including design reviews. Contribute to verification, validation, and reliability testing in collaboration with the Test Engineer. Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineering staff on mechanical design and manufacture. Person Specification: You are a highly detail-oriented Engineer with a strong, practical and thoughtful engineering mindset and good systemic thinking. You have a passion for identifying and addressing complex technical challenges with creative, scalable and sustainable solutions in collaboration with others. You are enthusiastic about continuous learning and applying fundamental engineering principles with curiosity to innovative problem solving. You’re comfortable and engaged working in a multidisciplinary engineering team, able to take responsibility for mechanical systems while collaborating closely with biologists, hardware, and software engineers. You enjoy translating complex ideas between teams with varying technical backgrounds, ensuring clear communication and shared understanding across the business. You will bring a proactive, adaptable, and reflective approach, with the ability to work effectively where requirements evolve as products mature, learning on the job, and rising to new challenges with enthusiasm. Key: MEng (or equivalent Master’s degree) in mechanical engineering. Minimum of 3 years industry experience. Practical, hands-on experience of mechanical design for complex electromechanical systems Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as 3D printing, machining, and sheet metal fabrication. Proven ability to plan, schedule, and deliver complex projects independently. Clear communication of design strategy and choices to both internal and external stakeholders. Proficiency with Fusion360 or similar CAD software and production of detailed engineering drawings. Ability to conduct rapid, fail fast iterative prototyping during early-stage development with the rigour of ISO 13485 or compliance as the product matures. Adaptability and resilience to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Desirable: Experience in the Medical Device industry or in laboratory automation. Experience taking designs from concept through prototyping and test. Experience applying the rigour of ISO 13485 or similar compliance standards as the product matures. Knowledge of electrical circuit design and electromechanical and fluidic systems. Prior experience with design for manufacturing and assembly. Experience developing products under Design Controls.
