Varian is seeking a Network Engineer to support its Managed Services global business. The role focuses on operational best practices, maintenance, and refinement of both public and private cloud environments. The Network Engineer will support new and legacy applications, continuously improve our cloud infrastructure, and collaborate with Service, Operations, Product Management, and Security teams.
Responsibilities
* Providing network operations and support for Varian’s cloud solutions (private, public, and hybrid infrastructure, network and security).
* Assisting with upgrading, installing, and configuring various cloud solutions including monitoring, application access, security, Palo Alto Networks (Highly Recommended), Citrix NetScaler, Citrix ADC.
* Assisting with reporting on current infrastructure status, and planning for future usage.
* Configuring and supporting backbone connections over ExpressRoute (Azure), direct connections, and VPN architecture.
* Maintaining allocation of IP CIDR blocks and performing maintenance involving modification of networks, subnets, VLANs, routes, etc.
* Verifying and acting on events aggregated from network monitoring tools and Web Application Firewall using Varian approved tools.
* Troubleshooting and determining root cause of issues.
* Collaborating to quickly resolve any network‑related outages and resolve customer impacting issues quickly.
* Contributing to the successful execution of projects.
* Creating, updating, and completing documentation.
* Investigating root cause analysis of incidents with follow‑up reporting and final content generation.
* Collaborating with network engineers on procedures, techniques, tips & knowledge to improve operations, security, and work performed.
* Providing the highest level of customer service.
* Advancing understanding of vendor and telco/exchange/service provider support escalation paths and being able to escalat support requests to these vendors in a typically urgent and timely fashion.
* Applying network system updates, patches, and configuration changes.
* Planning network layouts and configuring systems to user environments.
* Serving as a technical mentor to colleagues as necessary.
* Staying up to date with assigned Learning Management System courses.
* Maintaining a strong knowledge of Varian’s suite of applications.
* Eagerness to provide the highest level of customer service.
* On‑call support as required.
* Working schedule: North American business hours.
Minimum Qualifications
* Degree in computer science or other engineering/technical discipline (preferred); equivalent 5–7 years of relevant experience may substitute.
* Experience in supporting and managing networks in an enterprise cloud computing environment.
* B. Deep understanding of network protocols, addressing, NAT, subnetting, CIDR, routing and switching; dynamic routing protocols (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, MPLS) and VLANs, STP, layer 2/3 concepts.
* C. Network performance analysis; ability to interpret packet captures (Wireshark, tcpdump, iperf, SolarWinds).
* D. WAN and VPN knowledge (MPLS, SD‑WAN, IPsec, SSL VPN; Microsoft ExpressRoute experience preferred).
* E. Hands‑on experience with hybrid networking and Azure Virtual Network, Palo Alto Network Firewalls, routers, switches, load balancers, and firewalls (Cisco, Juniper, Fortinet, Citrix NetScaler, etc.).
* Network Security Concepts:
o Expertise in firewalls, IDS/IPS, ACLs, and DDoS mitigation.
o Authentication and encryption (RADIUS, TACACS+, PKI, SSL/TLS).
* Hands‑on experience troubleshooting telecom/peering partner networks.
* Understanding of vendor and telco/exchange/service provider support escalation paths.
* Experience working with business‑critical, highly available, and scalable infrastructure and applications.
* Experience with ticket handling and processing.
* Clear communicator, ability to explain technical terms to business and customer stakeholders.
* Hands‑on experience with Microsoft Azure networking services and features.
* Hands‑on experience with Palo Alto Networks (required), Cisco and Juniper devices and features.
* ITIL knowledge and experience with Incident, Problem, Change processes.
* Experience creating diagram documentation (Visio/Lucidchart).
* Experience writing technical documentation, especially for cloud architecture.
* Will be required to write as‑built, operating procedures, and instructions/templates.
* Hands‑on experience with firewalls, managed switches, and router configurations.
Desired Experience
* Palo Alto Networks Certification PCNSA/PCNSE.
* Azure Network Engineer Certification.
* Azure Administrator Certification.
* Telco/provider experience with Lumen, CenturyLink, Cox, Level 3, Equinix, AT&T, etc.
