Trauma Orthopaedic Nurse Specialist

The Trauma Orthopaedic Nurse Specialist is a senior clinical role within the Trauma and Orthopaedics team at Kings Mill Hospital, focused on delivering expert, patient‑centred care for trauma and fracture patients across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency pathways.

The post holder leads the coordination of trauma admissions and patient flow, working closely with consultants and the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient, and timely treatment. They play a key role in pre‑operative optimisation, supporting daily trauma lists, ward rounds, and theatre planning.

A major part of the role involves running the Virtual Fracture Clinic (VFC) and Fracture Liaison Service (FLS), providing follow‑up care, patient education, and proactive support to reduce future fractures through osteoporosis and falls prevention.

Alongside direct clinical care, the nurse specialist acts as a role model and educator, supporting staff, patients, and carers, while contributing to audit, quality improvement, and service development.

This is a dynamic, autonomous role that combines advanced clinical practice, coordination, and leadership to improve patient outcomes and ensure high‑quality, seamless trauma orthopaedic care.


Key Responsibilities

Take responsibility for trauma admissions and patient flow coordination; liaise with consultants and multidisciplinary teams to ensure efficient, safe, and timely treatment; support pre‑operative optimisation; assist daily trauma lists, ward rounds, and theatre planning; run Virtual Fracture Clinic (VFC) and Fracture Liaison Service (FLS); provide follow‑up care, patient education, and proactive osteoporosis/falls prevention; educate and mentor staff, patients, and carers; contribute to audit, quality improvement and service development.


Person Specification


Knowledge

* Experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics
* Knowledge of trauma, osteoporosis fall prevention, multiple pathology, polypharmacy
* Knowledge of DVT risk assessment and treatment
* Knowledge of running VFC clinics
* Ability to apply different plasters, splints, issue walking aids
* Advising and managing problems arising due to plasters, fracture treatment and wound management
* Work autonomously and as part of a team
* Evidence of further education and willingness to undertake further training and education
* Good computer skills (Microsoft Word and Excel)
* Experience in initiating and developing new services
* Experience of setting up processes across the department
* Experience in venepuncture and cannulation
* Evidence of teaching, supervision and mentorship
* Use of databases and other client management systems such as Medwaydent or prescriber qualifications


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse
* BSc or relevant experience
* Post Graduate degree (or willing to undertake)
* Nurse independent prescriber (or willing to undertake)


Experience

* Advanced knowledge of trauma, osteoporosis, falls, multiple pathology, polypharmacy and DVT risk assessment and treatments
* Plaster, splint application, management of plaster problems, wound problems
* Issuing of walking aids
* Evidence of continued professional development
* Willingness to travel cross site and to attend relevant meetings, conferences and educational courses
