Job Description
There is a certain kind of designer who outgrows being “the middle one in the team.”
You can detail beautifully. You understand bathrooms, joinery, and bespoke furniture. You can pull together FF&E schedules that actually make sense in the real world. You know your way around AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop and InDesign without drama. But what you really want is more ownership. More visibility. More of the whole story.
This is that move.
Modus Careers is working with a small, design-led interior studio based in Kingston upon Thames. A tight, talented team delivering high-quality residential work for repeat private clients. They are now embarking on their biggest project to date, a substantial Surrey renovation that will transform a contemporary home into something far more layered and refined, think London townhouse sensibility, crafted detail, and considered materials.
And they need a midweight interior designer who wants to be in it from the very beginning.
Not just concept boards. Not just production drawings. The full scope.
You will work closely with the Head of Design, learning directly from someone who leads creatively but is deeply involved in technical execution. You will support and develop detailed bathroom, joinery and furniture design.
You will manage FF&E specifications and procurement. You will build and maintain schedules in Excel, liaise with contractors and clients, and be present on site. This is not a backseat role.
The studio is small, friendly and serious about quality. They do not have layers of hierarchy. If you are good, you will be trusted. If you are curious, you will learn quickly. If you are organised and enthusiastic, you will thrive.
The initial focus will be a 12 to 18-month high-value residential renovation for a repeat client, alongside another live project. It is a rare opportunity to see a substantial scheme evolve from concept to completion within an intimate team environment. You will understand how design decisions translate into budgets, procurement timelines and built reality. That kind of exposure is gold dust at midweight level.
They are based in Kingston upon Thames, with built-in flexibility. There is scope to work from home on Fridays and a grown-up approach to balancing life and studio. The role is intended as a permanent position, with long-term potential as the practice continues to grow.
They are looking for:
* At least three years’ experience within a design studio
* Strong technical ability, particularly in detailed bathroom, joinery and furniture design
* Proven residential experience delivering functional, high-quality schemes
* Confidence in taking projects from concept through to completion
* Experience managing FF&E specifications and procurement
* Comfortable managing budgets in Excel and tracking project schedules
* Clear, confident communication with contractors and clients
* A genuinely enthusiastic, collaborative attitude
Salary is £35,000 to £38,000 depending on experience.
If you are a midweight designer who wants more than just a title, if you want real exposure, responsibility and mentorship within a design-led studio, this is a genuinely exciting next step.
