The emergency department provides a 24‑hour service and is fast‑paced, handling primarily adult patients (above 16 years) with injuries, chronic and acute conditions, some of which may be life‑threatening. Workload can change from minute to minute and staff must be able to work under pressure to deliver care during periods of extreme service demand.
Responsibilities
* Ensure patients attending the emergency department are treated within national standards and performance measures are met.
* Be responsible and accountable for safe, effective and compassionate nursing care for all patients in the department.
* Exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code.
* Supervise, support and educate junior members of the team, acting as a role model.
* Support the department manager to ensure organisational goals and objectives are met.
* In the absence of the department manager, be directly responsible for maintaining clinical, professional and cleanliness standards.
* Ensure effective communication internally and externally regarding patient care and resources.
* Comply with the trust’s vision, values and behavioural compact.
* Provide effective clinical leadership to support the delivery of the trust vision and values.
* Promote a positive patient experience in an environment that enables compassionate care, delivering harm‑free care within own limitations.
Essential Qualifications
* Experience as a Band 5 nurse.
* Experience of leading a team.
* Evidence of innovation in practice.
* Experience of coordinating a team in caring for patients from admission to discharge.
* Experience of line management of staff.
* Current NMC registration (Level 1 adult nurse).
* Degree in nursing studies or a related health‑care subject, or evidence of currently working towards this (UK equivalent).
* Mentorship certificate or practice assessor training, or demonstrable equivalent experience.
* Awareness of national health and social care policy.
* Knowledge of best practice in the area of specialism.
* Thorough understanding of expanded roles and professional practice issues.
* Clinical teaching experience.
* Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required.
* Able to work without supervision.
* Competent in the use of IT packages.
* Proven interpersonal skills.
* Evidence of competency in relation to nursing practices appropriate to the post.

* Management and leadership training.

* Understanding of budget and financial control systems.
