An exciting opportunity to work in a band 6 role on neurology ward covering maternity leave. This post is a secondment post and for internal applicants.

The role involves shift leading, supporting the team, supporting the Band 7 and working closely with the MDT.

This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route however sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds (£25000), and any role-specific criteria.

Main duties of the job

1. To be able to prioritise patient care and safety - communicating with patients and relatives, maintaining clear documentation and communication.
2. To be competent in ward audits, health roster and safe care.

Please note that this role is a secondment opportunity. Before applying you must seek agreement and authorisation from your current line manager. Secondments can’t be agreed without your current manager’s approval. If you are unable to gain your managers approval you should refrain from applying unless you wish to take this role as a fixed term position

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

· To work with the Matron and Ward manager to identify and promote evidence based clinical practice within neurology and PIU (Patient investigation unit), through the implementation and facilitation of clinically based teaching / education, to ensure that staff are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their roles competently.


· Work alongside the Matron and Ward manager to assist in the development of quality Induction and Competency programmes. These must reflect contemporary practice whilst incorporating national guidance and support the Trust's clinical governance agenda.


· Assist in the delivery of an educational programme for staff new to the neurology environment, incorporating theoretical teaching, clinical skills assessment and formulation of personal development plans for all areas. This will involve supporting other wards within the Division and working cohesively in enhance patient pathways and staff development.


· As a band 6, you will identify and promote evidence based nursing practice within the department, through the implementation and facilitation of clinically based teaching / education, to ensure that staff are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their roles competently, including the planning and development of monthly clinical governance sessions. The post holder will be responsible for the creation and update of any competencies within the department. They will also be responsible for ensuring all staff are signed off as competent in each of the department competencies and ensure all competencies for all staff are reviewed on a yearly basis.


· Work closely with the wider MDT to support therapies and cohesive working between the whole team and ensure best practise standards are met and measured.


· As a band 6, the post holder will be responsible for the supporting the induction programme of all new starters within the department, including Student Nurses, Training Nurse Associates and international starters. He / she will also engage with the on-going development needs for staff as identified in individual appraisals.


· To support the Ward Manager to ensure the highest standards of care are maintained at all times within the department. She/he will be accountable for the provision of effective professional nursing leadership for the clinical area. As an experienced practitioner the post holder will be expected to focus on providing a clean environment for care, ensuring best practice in infection control, improving clinical care standards and treating patients with dignity and respect. The post holder will ensure safe staffing and skill mix and manage the rota in the absence of the Nurse Manager.


· As the band 6 you will initiate and undertake / supervise specific projects and audits related to the professional development of nursing, monitoring standards of care and acting as an agent for change in achieving a culture that is flexible and responds positively to the demands and future development of the service. You will also undertake research and lead clinical audits in the specialist area.


· The post holder will take responsibility for the creation of patient information through the CPIG process and review patient information ensuring it is up to date and formatted to the trust standard. They will understand and ensure procurement necessities are available and ensure staff are aware of equipment to support patient therapies. They will do this whilst proactively seeking ways to create a more sustainable department aligned with the NHS net zero targets. The post holder will also be responsible for stock levels within the department whilst being aware of budgetary control and proactively identifying cost savings where appropriate.
