The role
Roles and Responsibilities
- Acts as Head of the Marine Department Offshore.
- Deputises for Master/OIM in the event that the Master/OIM becomes incapacitated, serving as second in command of the vessel.
- Reviews and updates risk assessments and rig‑specific work methods with marine crews on a regular basis, ensuring that the appropriate risk assessment is reviewed prior to each task and updated after completion.
- Acts as SECT Owner and Verifier for personnel within the Marine Department.
- Supervises safety drills and emergency team training to ensure they are carried out in accordance with company expectations.
- Acts as Safety Officer on vessels lacking an appointed Safety Officer.
- Organises the workload of the deck crew to ensure safe, efficient and effective operations.
- Ensures that Dynamic Positioning and/or Mooring Operations are performed in accordance with company expectations and current marine best practices.
- Supervises stability calculations and ballast operations, maintaining watertight integrity.
- Supervises loading and unloading operations.
- Ensures compliance with COSHH regulations within the department.
- Ensures safe stowage of hazardous materials, including radioactive sources and explosives.
- Controls helicopter operations.
- Inspects and maintains all lifting appliances onboard and keeps the register of all lifting equipment up to date.
- Maintains marine certification and paperwork, keeping them current.
- Maintains marine planned maintenance, including all marine, fire‑fighting and lifesaving equipment.
- Ensures Marine and Control Room logs are maintained correctly.
- Maintains regular contact with and instructs the stand‑by vessel on operational requirements.
- Ensures a supply of cement to the cement unit surge tank during cementing operations while on duty.
- Complies with the Permit to Work System, ensuring compliance within the Marine department.
- Controls the Marine budget.
- Acts as Ship Security Officer under the auspices of the ISPS code.
- Ensures that Competence Assurance of the Marine Department is addressed in a timely manner and meets company expectations, addressing all outstanding and overdue standards and elements.
- Ensures Offshore Marine Appraisals are conducted in accordance with company procedures and completed on schedule.
- Performs any other duties as required by Master/OIM and/or Shore based Management.
- Allocates tasks to the Barge Engineer and provides adequate supervision to ensure all such tasks are carried out safely and efficiently.
- Is responsible and accountable for the safety of personnel working under their direction and is expected to conduct operations at all times in full compliance with company procedures (SMS).
- Identifies and addresses any violations of procedures concerning personnel under their direction.
- Highlights and brings to the attention of the HoD/Master‑OIM any continuous or repeated violations of policies or procedures.
- Complies with the Management of Change principle.
- Actively participates in accident/incident investigations when required.
- Reviews ORA’s to ensure they have appropriate and sufficient mitigations.
- Reviews Presight and Maximo data daily and promptly addresses overdue or failed target items that fall within the department.
- Performs any other duties as required by the Master/OIM.
Suitable Applicants Should Ideally Have
- Valid UK Class 1 (Master Mariner) Certificate of Competency or entitlement to obtain UK Class 1 (Master Mariner).
- Certificate of Equivalent Competency DP certificate.
- Previous, extensive experience on an anchored/DP drilling unit.
- Exposure to operations in areas such as Control Room Operator, Dynamic Positioning Officer, Senior Dynamic Positioning Officer on a drilling vessel, including extensive watch‑keeping.
