About the Role Environment Officer – Radioactive Waste Specialist Are you enthusiastic and passionate about radioactive waste management or looking to develop into a new technical area from a related discipline? The opportunity We are recruiting for an experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated Radioactive Waste Management Specialist to work within the EDF Radioactive Waste Management group (part of the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality function). This team maintains radioactive waste governance, undertakes oversight and provides assurance to the business. The role provides key technical and specialist advice to all EDF nuclear sites within the UK, supporting operations, decommissioning and new build. The position offers an opportunity for personal development through the broadening of knowledge and experience in radioactive waste management, as well as allowing the successful candidate the opportunity to make a personal contribution to the UK radioactive waste sector. You can be based anywhere in the UK, however, preference will be given to those who can be based from (or routinely travel to) our Gloucester office. Travel to our sites and service providers will be required on a non-routine basis. Part-time or flexible working arrangements could be an option for the right candidate. Pay, Benefits and Culture We offer a competitive salary ranging from £61,730 - £95,993 with terms and conditions covered by the EDF Collective Agreement. What you’ll be doing We are looking for an experienced professional to join our Radioactive Waste Management team, reporting to the Group Head. In this role, you will be part of a dynamic and diverse team with expertise across the nuclear industry. You will take the lead on specific work packages, ensuring compliance and driving excellence in radioactive waste management. This includes supporting nuclear sites in meeting their legal obligations under the Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) and Nuclear Site Licence Conditions, while managing technically challenging projects. You will be responsible for developing and implementing governance arrangements that enhance performance, providing oversight and insight across the fleet, delivering training, managing external contracts, and offering technical support. The role also involves advising on and developing strategic BAT/BPM assessment methodologies, contributing to waste strategies that deliver operational and decommissioning benefits, and helping to build sustainable expertise across the organisation. Opportunities for broader involvement within the Environmental Safety and Sustainability Branch may also be available to support your long-term career development. Who you are For this role, you will need a HNC or equivalent as a minimum, ideally in a relevant scientific, technical or engineering subject and experience in leading radioactive waste management projects, oversight or performance improvement activities. Radioactive Waste Advisor (RWA) status, or development towards, would be beneficial. Relevant chartered status is desirable. You will have a robust understanding of policy and regulatory requirements relating to the management of solid radioactive waste in the UK and practical experience in the processes used to ensure that nuclear practices are optimised and justified to minimise risks to the public and the environment. You’ll be able to understand and have experience in the use of existing Lower Activity Waste processing and disposal practises and be familiar with the requirements for management of Higher Activity Wastes. A broad understanding of radioactive waste management outside of EDF and a proven ability to identify, and implement, best practice are desirable attributes. Ideally you will be able to demonstrate a bias for action with a proven track record in managing stakeholders’ expectations, experience in the specification, delivery and oversight of technical work from suppliers and have an exceptional safety and quality management focus. Curious by nature, you’ll have excellent critical analytical skills with the ability to assimilate technical information and make sound judgements, alongside clear, concise communication skills and good interpersonal skills. You’ll need to demonstrate how you build effective relationships with and influence different stakeholders, such as: stations; other departments; external suppliers; industry working groups, and regulators.
