Position Overview
The Training Programme Director – Plastic Surgery (East Sector) will support the Head of School in the strategic development of the School of Surgery and will lead the development of the School’s recruitment and retention strategy, contributing to the operational programme.
The role will involve improving learner supervision, assessment, engagement of faculty, and ensuring effective educational outcomes, now and in the future. It will also focus on whole workforce transformation and developing multi‑professional links.
Responsibilities
* Oversee the specialty’s regional training programme.
* Address specialty‑specific matters and trainee/trainer concerns.
* Lead recruitment to training posts and programmes.
* Manage postgraduate programmes, including assessments, progression, rotations, support and remediation, out‑of‑placement (OOP) management, trainee career support, part‑time training, inter‑deanery transfers, academic training and related work‑streams.
* Ensure compliance with national standards set by the Royal College and with established plastic surgery guidelines and standards.
* Serve as a member of the School Board.
Qualifications
* Experienced NHS Consultant with extensive understanding of plastic surgery training across the region.
* Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to work effectively within a multi‑professional team.
* Demonstrated experience in educational programmes and workforce transformation.
Eligibility / Operational Details
Applicants from within the NHS will be offered on a secondment basis only; an agreement must be obtained from their employer prior to submitting the application.
Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.
Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40 % of their time working in our offices.
All new educator appointments are scheduled to end 31 March 2027, with possible but not guaranteed extensions beyond this date. If you currently work within the NHS and are successful, an Inter‑Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) will be initiated.
