Shift Leader – Engineering Services
Position Overview
The Shift Leader is responsible for delivering comprehensive engineering support to ensure all operational building assets are maintained to the highest possible standard.
This role requires a detailed technical understanding of building services systems, strong contingency planning capability, and full compliance with current Health & Safety legislation and industry codes of practice.
You will ensure engineering operations are effectively controlled, with full consideration given to safety, business risk, and uptime requirements. The role demands high standards of asset performance, timely completion of all assigned works, and the prompt resolution of abnormal operating conditions.
Acting as the on-site coordination lead, the Shift Leader oversees the engineering team, Specialist Service Providers (SSPs), and support teams to ensure all activities are executed safely, professionally, and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Operational & Engineering Control
Maintain 100% uptime across all critical systems in line with operational requirements
Competently operate and monitor all building systems
Supervise and coordinate PPM and reactive maintenance within agreed timescales
Allocate and manage maintenance tasks via the maintenance management system
Maintain accurate plant records and asset registers
Inspect completed works prior to permit and job ticket closure
Deliver comprehensive shift handovers, covering plant status, isolations, ongoing works, and housekeeping
Provide sickness and holiday cover for opposite shift personnel where required
Permit to Work & Compliance
Manage and control the Permit to Work (PTW) system and Safe Systems of Work
Review and monitor Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
Ensure full compliance with current Health & Safety legislation and company procedures
Coordinate, approve, and close permits, escalating concerns where necessary
Provide end-of-business reporting on outstanding permits
Conduct site inductions and maintain accurate compliance records
Ensure service providers meet contractual Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
Specialist Service Provider Management
Coordinate and oversee all specialist service provider visits
Confirm approved SOPs, RAMS, and PTWs are in place prior to works commencing
Inspect and verify the quality of completed works, signing off documentation as appropriate
Escalate technical recommendations, performance issues, or compliance concerns to management
Monitor supplier activities to ensure safe and compliant conduct at all times
Quality Assurance & Housekeeping
Maintain QA audit procedures for tools, ladders, PPE, lifting equipment, and access systems
Ensure inspection logs are accurate, up to date, and audit-ready
Monitor plant rooms and critical infrastructure areas for cleanliness and operational integrity
Maintain workshops, storage areas, rest facilities, and plant spaces to a professional standard
Projects & Site Works
Oversee small-scale project works, including moves, changes, and planned refurbishments
Liaise with approved contractors and suppliers to ensure safe and compliant project delivery
Support operational changes within front-of-house and common areas where required
Systems & Equipment Responsibility
Operational knowledge and fault-finding capability across:
Building Management Systems (BMS)
Lighting Control Systems
Air Conditioning Systems (including Chilled Beams and FCUs)
Variable Speed Air Handling Units (AHUs)
Boilers and Heating Systems
Single and Three-Phase Motors
UPS Systems and associated controls
Emergency Lighting Systems
Generators
Static Switches
Water Treatment Systems
Refrigeration Systems
Personal Attributes & Qualifications
Essential
Minimum 10 years’ experience within the Building Services industry
City & Guilds Parts 1 & 2 (2360) or equivalent qualification
18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations
Strong technical competence across electrical and mechanical building services systems
Proven ability to lead, motivate, and coordinate a technical team
Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively at all levels
Proactive, quality-driven approach to engineering delivery
Good IT literacy and reporting capability
Physically fit and able to meet site operational demands
Professional, presentable, and punctual with high levels of integrity
Ability to interpret and act on written and verbal instructions
Willingness to undertake further technical or leadership training where required

City & Guilds 2391 Test & Inspection qualification
Candidates with strong leadership capability who may not meet all technical criteria may still be considered, subject to approval. Structured training and development will be provided where necessary
