Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia
Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BHNFT) is delighted to be looking to appoint one whole‑time Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia to join our team. This post is to allow cover of ICU by trained ICU consultants along with expansion of anaesthetic services to meet activity and service specification demands.
This post will suit an appropriately trained clinician with CCT or equivalent in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthetics who values teamwork, quality of life and work‑life balance, forward‑thinking dynamic attitudes to patient care, and respect and compassion to all staff members, patients and their families.
Clinicians interested in point‑of‑care ultrasound (Echo, POCUS, FUSIC, fTOE, regional anaesthesia) will find their needs more than met with state‑of‑the‑art ultrasound and echocardiogram machines and, if needed, training available in‑house by our department ultrasound leads who are fully accredited.
Those interested in education will be supported fully to explore internal and external roles such as college tutor/TPD/Head of School/Director of Medical Education, FRCA/FICM/EDIC examinerships, management roles or any other opportunities for self‑development. Main duties of the job
Clinical Services
To provide, along with colleagues, an efficient and effective critical care and anaesthetic service to BHNFT.
Provide high quality critical care services for Critical care and Outreach.
- Provide anaesthetic services and assist in coordinating their delivery within the Trust.
- Supervise, coordinate and provide an out‑of‑hours anaesthetic service to theatres, the obstetric unit and intensive care along with the non‑consultant anaesthetic staff.
- Advise clinical colleagues on matters within his/her particular spheres of interest.
- To work closely with all members of the Critical Care CSU in order to provide a comprehensive, high quality service in all clinical areas.
Training and Education
To participate in the teaching and training programmes including:
- Joint responsibility for the training and education of the non‑consultant medical staff within the department.
- Contribute to the training of medical students, nurses, theatre staff and paramedics.
- Involvement in post‑graduate and continuing professional development for the department and Trust.
- To participate in the formal appraisal of junior medical staff in accordance with the guidelines from the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Regional Postgraduate Dean. Develop as an Educational Supervisor.

Person Specification
Experience
- Satisfactory completion of training as required by the Royal College of Anaesthetists as assessed by the College assessor.
- Suitable experience in all areas of clinical practice required for the post.
- Demonstrates commitment to the post applied for.
- Has ability to empathise and interact effectively with patients and the multidisciplinary team
- Shows concern for excellence and is able to set, prioritise and monitor performance against objectives.
- Good team player
- Is able to gain the commitment of others including peers and patients, presenting themselves positively and showing self‑confidence and personal drive

Qualifications
- FRCA or equivalent with CCT in both Anaesthetics and ICM at the time of commencing the post.
- Registered with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register (within 6 months of interview)
- A higher Intensive Care Exam eg. FFICM, EDIC
Skill
- Clinical competence and appropriate training in the range of clinical practice required of the post.
- Be able to effectively supervise trainees within the anaesthetic department.
- The passion and ability to teach and develop junior medical staff, clinical support staff and medical students and enhance their performance.
- The ability to create, enhance and maintain effective working relationships.
- The ability to identify the need for and to initiate and implement change and improvement in clinical services.
- The ability to plan, allocate and evaluate work.
Knowledge
- Is on the GMC specialist register or eligible for admission to the register.
- Knowledge and understanding of the statutory and regulatory environment within which the medical services operate within the NHS.
