Overview

The VITREORETINAL fellowship is available at the John Radcliffe Hospital. This post is suitable for doctors who have completed their training but seek experience in vitreoretinal surgery prior to obtaining a consultant appointment. It is not a post that is approved for training by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Candidates are welcome to visit the department and are invited to contact Consultant, Mr Sher Aslam Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Oxford Eye Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, The John Radcliffe (Tel: Oxford 01865 234567).

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust provides a regional service for vitreoretinal surgery for a catchment population of 1 million patients, caring for both children and adults. The full range of vitreoretinal conditions are treated, in addition to novel therapies, including gene therapy, subretinal electronic implants, robotic surgery, and Paediatric vitreoretinal surgery.

In addition, we have a comprehensive range of medical retina services, covering complex macular disease clinics, a focus on OCT training /teaching as well as retinovascular diseases and genetics.

As a major international ophthalmic research unit, we strongly encourage research and service development projects. Here at Oxford, we participate and lead in clinical trials supported by a dedicated clinical trials unit for Ophthalmology. This department runs studies in macular telangiectasia, gene therapy for retinal genetic diseases and uveitis.

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research. The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Our values, standards and behaviours define the quality of clinical care we offer and the professional relationships we make with our patients, colleagues and the wider community. We call this Delivering Compassionate Excellence, and its focus is on our values of compassion, respect, learning, delivery, improvement and excellence. These values put patients at the heart of what we do and underpin the quality healthcare we would like for ourselves or a member of our family. Watch how we set out to deliver compassionate excellence via the OUH YouTube channel.

In 2023 NHS England launched its first sexual safety charter, and our Trust proudly signed it. We pledge zero tolerance for inappropriate sexual behaviour and commit to the ten core principles. Oxford University Hospitals promotes a safe, respectful hiring environment.
